New Zealand Earthquakes

Is it just me, or is that quite a lot of earthquakes to happen over four days?

The ground is shaking all the time, weakening buildings even more with every aftershock.

I saw a picture of a car that was in a liquifacton zone and was basically gone all the way to the edge of the back seats. There were people inside of it too, but they got out.

One of my stupid neighbors went out rubbernecking despite warnings by the police and council and ended up sinking their car into a liquefaction pool and tying up emergency services. People are still getting arrested too for trying to sneak through the cordons and stealing/looting.

By the time other countries and private companies have bailed us out this city will be like 10% New Zealand owned.

Ah, I see now, I misread the graph and thought that the green dots were every single earthquake and aftershock that had ever occurred before Feb. 22nd.

i is alive just, only just got power on, i was at my computer and run out, i would of been in this..

Holy shit. You were in there?

Glad to hear that you're OK! Close call.

Have we now accounted for all of our Christchurch-dwelling regulars?

yeah as we were coming out the cliff on the other side of us was coming down, as we were out down the round from the epicentre shit was crazy

Are you on the east side of the city?

Oh true...I have a friend out at brighton who lost his house, really sad.

I'm in the papanui/bishopdale area.

I was in Christchurch three years ago. Not the prettiest place on earth, but I didn't think the buildings were this weak.

It's mainly because most of the city is built on swampland, I think.

Just thought I'd make a quick bump to show you guys this photo, shows how many buildings have been removed from the CBD so far.

Wow. It looks so vacant compared to the rest of the city.

Indeed. If there's anything good to come from it, it's that a lot of stores have relocated much closer to where I live.

Just a quick update for anyone who's interested.

Went on a bus tour they're running through the 'red zone' today, managed to get some photos. It's a very eerie place, just looking in all the empty buildings and seeing the destruction, and passing the sites where the most casualties were was pretty sobering.

In February the city will have been closed off for a year.

here's some pics.

The whole central business district, yes.

Every time I read about that district being closed, I think, "What a waste, there's perfectly good buildings just sitting there not being used." Then I immediately remember that structural damage is the reason earthquakes are bad :|

Is there an ETA for this area being reopened?

There will be no city for at least a decade according to estimates. Pretty much every building in those photos needs to come down minus a handful, and we just don't have the manpower or money to get it done quickly.

That's awful man, I've spent a bit of time in ChCh and it was a beautiful city

Wow feels like yesterday it happened..

Ill get some after shots tomorrow at work

All those Chep pallets!

Looks just like my work, same forklifts and everything.

(why so much Bundaberg?)

Damn. I never knew just how much damage this earthquake caused. Nor did I really appreciate just how shitty structural damage is for a large building, e.g., a gleaming multimillion-dollar structure that is home to hundreds of businesses that is suddenly completely invalid and has to come down.

A friend of mine just had his house inspected (finally) and has been told that it requires demolition, which sucks. We've just finished having our placed fixed, nothing too big thankfully.

We've been looking for the terrists in the wrong countries. A giant palette of SARS, ready for distribution.
What the hell is the 28th month anyway?! /troll

Do you work for Bundaberg or something?

That's how we write the date in the UK, I know that much. Day, Month, Year.

I think people disregarded the /troll remark and decided to post about his sarcasm anyway. Me, I love the stuff; great with Southern Comfort.

F*cksicles. I didn't even see the "/troll". I'm out of jaffa cakes and I'm very emotional right now. This is a crisis.
