I'm reading through the book right now, and while its incredibly dated (being well over a century old thats not what I'd call surprise), Wells does have an amazing eye towards the future with his ideas.
And while its of course very different, the movie seems to certainly have taken some cues from the book. Clips of lightening arcing from the sky and people trying to cross a river in a ferry that comes under attack can't simply be coincidence.
