well that's one hell of a screw up

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/6012/e3-2011-microsoft-details-leaked-halo-4-confirmed

I thought this was fake until a little check-a-rooney of all the news sites. Well hot damn, isn't that going to suck.

Oh wow, they are making Halo 4?! Who'd have thunk it, seeing as how previous Halo titles are such total commercial flops :upstare:

Halo is actually pretty cool, it keeps all the children from playing the good games and screaming on their microphone. I like it.

people on facebook are saying it's fake cuz they said Halo reach was the last Halo Game. XD

I don't think it is real either. The story is over. Let it die in peace. Same goes for God of War. Let's hear it for new IP!!!

Halo3 had a cliffhanger ending no way that's how they'd leave the franchise not to mention getting a live action movie.

Halo 4 is really Half Life 3 being developed by Valve and Microsoft.

didn't Bungie say they were done with Halo? is it another dev team??

Yeah, MS is having another dev team go at it. Bungie is hard at work on a new IP.

Well they just announced Anniversary (Halo 1 remake). If there's actually a 4...it's going to kick ass!

halo remake just confirmed from E3

looks to be using halo: reach assets and models, but doesn't look like the same engine or similar gameplay at all. if anything, it looks like they've just put a new skin on top of the old gameplay.

I thought sarcasm was implied with Bungie.

are you really going to try and imply that irregardless of your liking for the game, you're going to be sarcastic about bungie putting in hard work to make and maintain a game? i really, really, really don't want this thread to turn into that, but theatre, forge, firefight, it's continuous online support, it's support for and from the community, bungie.net, co-op... come on man, be reasonable here. like it or not, they put the effort in to make games for people who do enjoy the halo universe.

I'm not saying they don't work hard and do technologically good work, but I am saying that the quality of their canon and storytelling took a serious nosedive after Halo 1.

see, this baffles me, because i don't even think the story in halo 1 was much cop outside of being heavily influenced by aliens and so whether or not the story should suddenly excel out from being anything other than a brutish science-fiction space drama with religious overtones is beyond me. my question is; what were people expecting from the premise of the original halo? i think for what it is, it's pretty good. i'm not saying that it has no excuse to have better storytelling, but i'm not sure how serious a nosedive it can be when to start with it wasn't anything remotely special or groundbreaking in terms of it's story.

It looks like they are returning to the feel of Halo:CE where its you alone and stranded in strange and hostile place. I liked that feel.

I also noticed that we will probably have weapon attachments in this one.

Do you think these aliens are the Forerunners?

halofags on halflife2.net! oh boy

"OMG BUNGIS SO GOD, THEY SUPPORT THEIR GAMES" I WONDER WHY

Same. The later games in the series rarely had that.

I'd like the new aliens to be completely seperate from the main story - leaving MC all alone in strange place with nothing but whatever weird guns he can find and bugs to stomp.

stig said, or at least implied before he detailed his allegation, that they didn't work hard on a game. as you say, it's no wonder that they do. i was pointing this out and why it made no sense. if anything, you're attempt to get a quick quip in here is pretty pointless, because i agree - they support their game, thus making the sarcasm from earlier pretty silly.

edit: no need for me to be making quick quips myself, really. nonetheless, not a fan of halo? don't open the thread.

Halo's story wasn't particularly deep, or moving, or dynamic, but it at least left enough things unanswered that it made sense. And the actual direction of the storytelling was very methodical, semi-drama action movie, that didn't just fall victim to tropes and cliches. Everything that was a cliche was subtle ("return to the beginning" style story, portrayal of standard objectives like rescues), and everything that was unique was well-saturated without being overexaggerated (e.g. purple aliens, Grunt behaviour). Then Halo 2 comes around and they just drench everything in bombast. Suddenly the Covenant elders are insane warmongers, and one of them apparently has Alzheimer's, the Flood are an arm of some bullshit mystical space entity, dual wielding weapons... it's like they hired Michael Bay to direct their storytelling and presentation after CE's release. Again, the actual technical and community aspects of their games are fantastic. The Forge, Bungie.net, replays, and their pioneering of the lobby system are practically revolutionary in the industry. But they have been making stupid games since 2002.

fair enough, i always thought it was pretty bad to begin with and let that be the standard for my enjoyment. halos story got me interested because of how much influence it took from popular sci-fi which, to an extent, made it a sort of rip off, but considering there wasn't any other enjoyable alternative to shooting up a bunch of aliens as colonial marines in james cameron-esqe drop ships inside of amazing brutalist architecture, i was hooked.

I like the Halo Story Arc. Got me involved and immersed in the Halo Universe. Gave me a reason as to why these aliens were attempting to slaughter me and a reason why I should blow the shit out of them.

They could have done it in a much more interesting way. The first Halo was very mysterious, the aliens reason didnt need to be so expounded upon, because there really wasnt one, they were batshit. The second one had the Covenants mystery stripped and loads of inane dialogue between overblown characters. While the first one was very complete and contained the second one was a cliffhanger with the battle for Earth part being totally pointless, pretty sure it was there for the advertising campaign.

Halo was certainly the best in terms of storyline and pacing. What it possessed over its successors was as stated above was atmosphere and a sense of mystery. I'm not going to say it's a masterpiece of alienation or wonder (Metroid Prime kicks the shit out of it and any other game in that respect) but it had its moments of quiet reflection and somber exploration. Halo 2 and 3 on the other hand decided the only thing to do was to notch up the adrenaline by 50 and every mission has to be balls to the wall action with a critical dosing of urgency. Earth is in danger! The Ark is gonna blow! Save Cortana! I remember how eerie it was discovering the Flood for the first time, or the incredible return to the Pillar of Autumn in it's dusty, ruined glory.

I didn't mind the story in Halo 2 or 3, it did keep me hooked. I think one has to approach it by gaming's standard, where I'd rank Halo as an engaging, though not particularly innovative saga. Even that first point takes out about 95% of any other gaming's stories out of contention. I'm not happy with Halo 4's announcement (and subsequent ****ing trilogy? What?), but if it takes a different approach to the testosterone filled, militaristic themes of the first trilogy, colour me very intrigued.

Pretty much this. I have never had that much respect for Halo (I have only played the first one, after all), but if they can do something different and interesting with the next 3(wtf) games, then they are definitely worth keeping an eye on, but somehow I can't escape the feeling that they will be trying to hard to be like what came before them and the focus will be lost.

WHERE'S YOUR MESSIAH NOW?
Haha! Swimming in the money vault with Scrooge McDuck and the other MS execs.

I feel as though 343 Industries is trying to squeeze out as much money from the Halo market as they can. I mean three more Halo games...seriously?!

I will actually be downright excited if 343 Industries bring the series back to its roots. Still not enough to make me buy a 360 or pay for online, but if I happen across a free console...

I bought one when my first broke after 1 and a half years, I bought a new hard drive when it became apparent my old one that did still work would not work on the slim, I bought a new recharge kit after the first one wouldnt hold a charge after about 3 recharges, BUT I WILL NOT PAY FOR XBOX ONLINE

I'm happy enough with Halo CE HD, personally.

Jesus. Just when I thought Halo had died with the absence of Bungie they go and announce another trilogy of the crap. Seriously, for all the bitching people do about CoD recycling the same shit year after year nobody seems to care that the Halo games recycle the same shit every time.
