News on half-life2.com

Hey, first post here (i think). I noticed something today after the preload came out. I was at the half-life2.com site and i clicked on the news link just to see if they said anything about the third preload. They did, which I thought was odd because with the other 2 preloads it was at least a few days before the news page was updated (as I remember)

I take a closer look at it and I notice that they change many of the news id numbers for the news items, even the old ones. As I remember, for the most part they were in numerical order starting at 1, but now they are all over the place, with the second preload at 301 and the third at 310.

I just thought it was strange for them to change most of the id values for no reason. let the speculation and such begin.

The only reasoning I can have behind it is either: 1) there's something hidden in there (in the numbers or in a news id not listed) or 2: they have way too much free time and thus half-life 2 is nearly done (but we all know that dont we) or 3: they made a new news database

[EDIT]: also, i forgot, the error message was changed for a wrong id.

Welcome to the forums, elusive one. I shall take a look at this. Thanks for the hint...

They can use whatever id numbers they want in their database at anytime. I don't think this means anything. Just some random shuffling for no apparent reason..

i dont get it

The news articles are referenced by an ID number that is auto incremented per news entry. He's saying it's 'odd' that they aren't like "1,2,3,4,5,6..". The large gaps probably have something to do with internal testing. It doesn't mean anything.

That's what I find odd about it

The odd thing is though, before the third update, they were in order

That's an interesting find. I've done a little checking: id 1, 3 and 5 exist

The latest id is 310...wait a sec...October 3!!!

The just do it on purpose, to make us search for imaginary patterns (and they succeeded)

I think it's because they unified their back-end news databases for all their sites. So, the news items on Half-Life2.com should match up with the IDs for the same news on Steampowered.

You people look too closely into things, geeze. Valve implemented a new news system that will be for all their websites.

Hmm works right now?

This is part of a new back-end news management system that all Valve websites (counter-strike.net, dayofdefeat.com, etc.) will use.

The numbers are news ID numbers, nothing more.
