News page and Forums

This message is for the webmaster(s), I was just wondering how you incorporate the news and the forum so well together. It's hard to explain, is the news page part of the forum script? Let's say I have a phpBB board, and I want to make a news page on my site using the forum database, how would I do that?

Our techie, Starmonkey, wrote the script, I think. Basically the News and Announcments forum is what we use to post the news. We make a thread in there and it generates and displays the correct information. Obviously using vBulletin's settings we've specified that only staff can make threads in that forum.

You might even be able to find a ready made hack that you can use. Try http://www.phpbbhacks.com/ and you might find something you can download and install :)
 
thanks man, if I don't manage to make it work, you think Starmonkey could help me with it? I'm not quite a newbie, but I'm not quite good either, I'm like in the middle.
 
He's always very busy so I can't promise that he'll have loads of time to help but he might be able to help a little bit. Just send him a forum PM if you can't get it sorted out.

What's your site by the way?

The layout is slightly based on the HL2.net page, but the design is completely different and pretty much everything is modified.

sorry but what do you mean? Everything works fine for me on the front page.
 
he means that it would be cool if he could use the formatting tags like making text a diffrent colour and size in news post's on the front page
 
It's funny how you got our code in your site. I don't mind if you create your own site based on this design but that does not mean copy and paste the whole thing and just change the colours a little.

Yeah, we're always happy to help, but stealing our code without permission isn't really on now is it?
 
Changing the copyright to your own when you've 'borrowed' Munro's design also wont earn you any favours.
 
Our news script was written by me, it's just a quick hack that pulls the topics from the vbulletin database - I have written one for phpbb as well.
I'm pretty sure there's one on phpbbhacks.com which does exactly what you're looking for.
 
I know most boards have a script like that built in (invision board has it). I guess some dont. It's a pretty easy hack though. As for site copying, you could atleast give them credit for the code...

I don't know what to say, but let me just clear up that it's only a personal website... it's not a big community like HL2.net is. All I wanted to do with this design is learn how to manipulate tables better. Looking at code from other sites is a great learning experience, and I'm sorry if I upset you by using some of yours. I'm willing to change anything you want on it. I just thought your layout was ideal, that's all. Tell me what to do and I'll collaborate.

It does matter, whatever the site. It's still thieving.
 
fine I'll just remove the copyright. For your information I didn't "thieve" the design, it took me a while to make my site, just because I used your table structure doesnt mean I stole your entire site. I had to learn how to make SSI menus, how to use javascript pop-ups, and then there is all the content I inserted. The tables are a small portion of the site. I'm sorry if the banner is 764 pixels wide like yours. I'm sorry but the site looks nothing like HL2.net, and besides I'm not even mentioning the game HL2 on it so it's not like I'm competition. You guys are making me look like a freaking jerk, when all I'm trying to do is learn how to make a site as pretty and useful as yours. I wouldn't call it theivery, I'd call it "reverse engineering". I deconstructed your site and rebuilt it into mine. Anyway enough ranting for now.
 
That doesn't matter. I'm sorry, but you did steal code, regardless of whether you are competition or not. You could have asked, and I'm sure someone would have been able to help.

Anyway, I'm staying out of this now :)
 
I fail to see how someone can learn by simply copying code across. Though they'd learn how to copy/paste I guess.

Though the design is stolen, I'd say you've changed it enough, but it's not my call to make. And you shouldn't use tables for layout purposes anyway. Bleh.

As for the news grabbing script, it's not hard to do. If you can code php that is. I could explain how I went about doing it for my punbb forum, but if you can't code php it won't be much use.

NOW, why doesnt someone just answer my goddamn question and tell me what to change about it to make it not-HL2.net.

Would creating different sized tables make it any better? Should I erase all my links and start them over again? Or should I just erase the whole site and rewrite it all myself from memory?

What the hell would make you happy?! I want menus on both sides and a banner on top, how much simpler can this be?

LOL if I understand correctly all he did was take the layout, some people need to take a chill pill, especially as he had no bad intentions and told you he had done it.

It's just his personall site... a learning project.
 
If you want to privately have a look at our code and play around with it in order to learn from it then please by all means do but that does not mean take it, change the colours a little and put it on the web.

I think you need to take the whole thing down and start a completely new one from scratch. Every line of code you should do yourself and then you can put up your own site.

I find this ironic considering you made a few minimal changes to my layout and then removed the credit I had requested. It's not like you're some saint of original site designs here. Cut the dude some slack.
 
I'm not sure what you're talking about as your name had always been on the template you done.
 
You resized a couple of tables, deleted the menu headers and cropped the logo. And then removed any mention of credit I requested. The difference between the layouts is about 5 minutes work. Don't get me wrong I don't care about the credit (otherwise I would have talked to you about it) but you're in no position to give this guy a hard time for such a minor thing.

Riiiight... you think this current layout is edited from yours? Apart from the logo and a couple of old graphics there isn't a single part of that old layout I used and they'll be going shortly as well.

Even if I was still using that layout it wouldn't matter as it was built for the sole use of Halflife2.net and not for a bunch of other sites to copy :) It's ours to use and no one elses.
 
Where's the bunch of other sites? All I see is some guy who used the table layout for his personal site.

And whether you physically "edited" it is irrelevant: the differences are minimal. The courteous thing to do would have been to leave some sort of credit. But it's a moot point; I don't care. The point is you're getting uptight about the page when
a) there's no reason to be
b) you're no pillar of excellence yourself when it comes to giving credit
 
If you really don't care stop trying to argue about nothing and let us get back to our own business :)
 
While we're all complaining about a pretty useless topic, why does HL2.net have HL2.net listed as one of the affiliates?

And for the sensible answer: they need somewhere to put the linkbutton so other sites can download and use it.
