Uhhh... why do the webmasters of this site post about Fan Art in the "Latest News" section... which isn't even really news, when they have yet to post links or even notify that there are new screenshots out. I find it funny that the webmasters are so strict about being on topic in the forums when they aren't even on topic in the news.

how dare you question their authority!

actually i agree with you on this

Yeah i agree too, the newsposters on this site are really slow, and sometimes they don't even post some news. But thats not why im here, i get better news from these forums and other sites then this one :)

if there is no news why not post some good fan art???

It's not about that, we are complaning that they DON'T post any news, or are slow at posting it when there IS news to post.

I think Grandpa Simpson said it best when he said "Oh BITCH BITCH BITCH"

Edit : Im not flaming anyone, im just saying, and isnt this supposed to be in the General Forums instead?

I posted the fanart news because everyone thought it was a fantastic piece of artwork. I don't usually post news at all - I'm a forum mod, not a news poster.

Perhaps you hadn't noticed, but there's an incredible drought of news at the moment. We have to fill that space somehow. If you don't like it, don't read it.

Err.. he did not say that he's against posting fanart in the news section, but if you add these kinds of subjects, why not add the new screenshots as well? In other words, he wonders why the news forum mods aren't consistent in their behaviour, that's all, no need to get defensive, it's just an observation

DeusEx2, yes he is. Read above.

We had those screenshots a month ago I didn't see much point posting about something everyone here had already seen.

But these were DIGITAL not magazine scans.

We could also take some printscreens from the videos or the leak but i dont really want to see that. :)

Why don't we just start making news ourselfs? We could kidnap various members of valve, or we could have a sex tape of half-life sleeping with deus ex, and it could be filmed all in night vision! Or we could steal the source code for Half-Life 2 and distribute it!

On a serious note, I'm glad it got linked in the news section, it was really cool, and I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

Good attitude. I wouldn't call screenshots a drought in the news... you could have filled the space with the fanart AND the screenshots. If you are acting all defensive because I said "I find it funny that the webmasters are so strict about being on topic in the forums when they aren't even on topic in the news." then perhaps you shouldn't have a website feedback forum.

"We had those screenshots a month ago I didn't see much point posting about something everyone here had already seen."

I didn't see them a month ago, and by "everyone here" I think you mean your IRC/forum going visitors... and they don't make up the bulk of the people that check your site. It's called "Latest News" and although fanart is great, putting it in "Latest News" over the Half Life 2 info that you THINK every person that visits your site knows all about, is sort of pointless. It's like you created a news page, but aren't posting any news because you are making the assumption that everyone already knows about it. Huh?

I didn't mean any offence by my comment, but the Half-Life 2 news isn't as slow as you make it out to be.

He has a point :)

Go Heleos, it's your birthday \\o o// o// \\o \o/

And who really cares about the Photoshop contest? This is a HL2 site not a Photoshop site. What I am trying to say is, why have it there? It doesn't belong there.

It needed a little help, as it wasn't getting enough entries. It's a contest that is run by this site, so we hold every right to publicize it in any way we want.

Just to keep chipping in the "be consistent" pile, I too think you need to maintain some consistency. First, you report only on HL2 news. No mods. No nothing else. Then, in quick succession, you post about fan art and a reminder about the Photoshop contest. If this was a fast-flowing news section, and covered mods and similarly "off topic" things, I'd think nothing of it. However, until now (with a few exceptions), you've been religiously game-only. It just seems a tad incongruous to me.

We decided to keep game/misc news seperate from actual modification news, which is why we made this forum.

Well, if you want to fill the news with shiz, just post some new models from mods. That would make people go to the Modification forum. That's inside publicity.

Tehehe! Yay time to get some good quality work done. Work that IchI might actually like.

You're dodging the question and you know it. The Modification News forum is a good substitute, but it's not the real thing. Anyways, I know .dev will fill this role, and I'm not asking for change or criticizing, I'm just pointing out a disparity.

I'd love to know what I'm 'dodging'... having modification news on the main page would clutter it up incredibly, going from one extreme of little news to the other, that you can't keep track with the damn stuff because of the sheer amount of it. This is why we have the forum seperate, and eventually, the .dev site with Majestic.

Are we okay on this now?

Argh! I'm not active for a few days and the users revolt lol.

Think of the news page and the forum like this:

The news page is like one of those 6:30pm news updates, short, to the point and with only the information that has the largest appeal. You tune in, see if there's anything interesting happened and thats it, you don't have to sit through hours of information you've no interest in. If you want to do that, you go to the...

...Forum, the forum is like CNN, plenty of rubbish with some interesting stuff you have to wade through to find. But you get the whole thing, the good and the bad.

If we posted lots of pointless news up on that page, you would all start complaining the interesting stuff was hard to find. Frankly only sites desperate for attention are filling their news with pointless rubbish, we don't want to do that, we're not going to trick users to this site making them think so much is going on cause the fact is there isn't, new info from Valve is scarce right now. So we're not going to pretend to the users that we've got more news than other sites, thats just sad

Someone complained about the recent magazine screenshots not making the news, but IIRC didn't they get a mention when they were first seen weeks/month ago, no point having them in the news again confusing people thinking there's new images available when their old already.

Granted, the Photoshop competition gets a mention from time to time because some of you didn't even know there was an art forum, so short of holding your hands and treating you like babies, a quick mention in the news does the job of getting it noticed. I'm sure you'd prefer a news item rather than treating you like babies, yeah?

Besides, look at some of the things you people write, would you really want to visit a site with some of that crap in its news page? The first page you see when you come here, its hardly a good advertisement to new users is it?

-

As for modification news. Well the biggest and brightest mods will probably get a mention from time to time, but forget it with the majority of them, many fail a few months later anyway, so it would be full of, well lets be honest, rather third rate artwork, lame idea's and the usual this project has died because we couldn't get along posts, we'll have the .dev site for the bulk of that, and the people who use that site will be genuinly interested in the behind the scenes of the mods.

The creation of mods simply don't interest everyone. Sure, most will play them, but not everyone cares about how their made. If you want to see in depth info on how a mod is working out and what their doing, you'll go to our .dev site. If you want general and the best of the crop news, you've got the news page, if you want the lot, you go to the forum and join in.

-

Someone mentioned users putting their own news up.. Thats exactly what happens right now, but only if you post something interesting enough. If you want to see what the news page will look like if all users make their own news then look at General Off-topic. Not very pretty is it?

So, stop whining, the news is fine as it is. Atleast you know the news on this site is only the important or most interesting news. Atleast you'll be sure that once HL2 is released, you'll be able to find it clearly on the first page of this site instead of 5 pages down because of news from some guy with his "dead cool" idea's for a mod and some crappy WIP images of untextured weapons

There, rant over. I swear ;)

Now, everyone give each other a big hug cause its christmas soon. Save your bitching until January :E

HL2World anyone? No offense to the site, but Fenric strikes a good point there. Still I'm with the seeming majority on this one, there is sometimes more news than gets posted on HL2.net. I think the gripe some people have here is that even when news is posted on HL2.net's main page, it can often be days later than on other websites if it even gets posted.

Fenric's explanation and reasoning on why they don't load up the main page with all the news out there is solid, but it's ultimately going to hold HalfLife2.net back and continue to make it "that place with the great forums but that's about all."

I get my news from HL2Files.com anyway, so it doesn't really affect me, but those are my thoughts on the subject, take 'em as you will.

Well, they do partly cover mod news. There always seem to be links to the modification news forum. And come on, the fan art was really good. Who cares if it shouldn't be there (and it should IMO).
