Taken from NTSC-UK:

'The new DS will use 2nd gen Tegra (Nvidia system on a chip platform based off of ARM cortex A9). 1st gen tegra can run QIII with FSAA and AF at 35fps @ 800x480 (higher res than individual screens on the DS are likely to have) . The DS2 will use a more advanced GPU and have up to 3 times the clock speed due to die shrinkage. 2010 release date possible/probable.'

There's also mention of the PSP2 - 'The PSP2 will use third gen Tegra with a GPU along the lines of the iphone GPU (which is similar to the Dreamcast GPU). However it'll be 4 cores and much more capable.'

'Regarding a DS successor, Iwata offered this: "[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing." '

The Tegra2 - which is what the DS2 will apparently be using - being demo'd at ces:

It looks like it'll fit somewhere between last and current gen home consoles in terms of power. Count me in :)

Yet another reason not to get a DSi. I really hope they don't load it up with useless features that will drive up the price. Is there any decent game that uses the camera?

wow little mobile devices are tearing it up!

Um, do want. Was looking forward to a picture or concept art of the unit though.

Is the screen going to be that large!?

And is it still going to have dual screens?

As long as it is powerful enough to let me play The Dig and Curse of Monkey Island in scummVM I don't give a shit what else it does. Oh, well power to run DOSBox as well would be some tasty gravy.

I think I read somewhere that the new DS would have motion controls of some sort.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Nintendo-Not-Planning-Motion-Tracking-DS-132002.shtml

Nintendo is well known for the secrecy that surrounds new projects, specifically when they are hardware related. Despite the endless speculation, the company is still not saying anything about the rumored Wii HD, which some state could arrive as early as 2011.

So, it was refreshing to see company president Satoru Iwata talking rather candidly about the successor to the Nintendo DS, which he revealed as including a motion tracking system. But it seems that Iwata was misunderstood, as explained by the company he leads.

Charlie Scibetta, who is the senior director of corporate communication at Nintendo of America, told Kotaku that “Mr. Iwata did not make any comments regarding the functions of Nintendo's future hardware systems,” adding that “The answer to the reporter's question was misinterpreted.” It seems that the problem was the translation of the statements made by Iwata, who was misquoted as saying that the follow-up to the DS line “will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing.”

The Nintendo DS line, which now includes the camera wielding DSi and the larger screen XL model, is facing strong competition not only from the PlayStation Portable made by Sony but also from Apple’s iPhone. Implementing a system that translates the movements of the user into input might help the Nintendo handheld fend off its newest rival, which is becoming an important platform for on the move gaming because of the high accessibility and low price of the titles offered.

Even with Nintendo saying that Iwata was misquoted, there will be speculations about the Nintendo DS future for months to come until the Japanese gaming company actually offers some official information related to its plans. The E3 trade show could be the venue to show off this motion interpreting Nintendo DS device.

As much as I love my DS, I think it's time Nintendo made a new gameboy. One screen ftw.

So how much better is the DS hardware than the wii's now?

Wait, what?

Are you talking about the current DS?

Easy to get excited about graphics chips, but remember: the Ram in this thing will likely be a piss-trickle compared to even last gen consoles. Sure the resolution isn't going to be massive anyway, but the textures are probably still going to be blurtastic.

That said, I've been looking forward to a new DS for sometime... though I am tempted to wait for the inevitable DS2 Lite... (hoping for backwards compatibility too.)

Can you run stuff like that on a DS VoS?
Sort of. The older less-hardware-intensive scummVM games like Sam & Max, Monkey Island 1 and 2, Fate of Atlantis and such work just fine and it is a wonder that LucasArts doesn't just put them out on a DS cart because they would make plenty. The Dig and COMI will not run due to the limitations of the current DS hardware (I think RAM mostly). DOSBox doesn't work on the DS due to the lack of horsepower as well, including the weakling processor. I would LOVE to see these 2 bits of gaming awesomeness be able to run on the new DS as I would be able to play all of my favorite games from like forever!!

1 day to go :)

Let's speculate!

Mockups (liking the first one):

I'm actually interested in seeing what Nintendo brings to the table with this one, may actually buy a handheld! *gasp*

I LOVE my DS Lite and cannot wait to see what the 3DS will be capable of. I am foreseeing a day 1 buy already!! That first vid looks fantastic!!

If this next-gen DS is backwards compatible and Squenix start bringing out some Front Mission games for it in English, I'll definitely buy it.

Edit: The first Front Mission is out for DS in english, Garg, possibly only US though. I forget if DS carts were region limited or not. >_>

I really can't get into that standard and wide screens. Most DS games worked well because the images on either screen would come together to create one continuous display, like using 2 monitors (except vertical obviously). With this it's like they intend for the bottom screen to be relegated to HUD/map/whatever functions, or purely for touch. Idunno, maybe I just need to see it in motion.

Speaking of continuous displays though, I'm pretty sure one of the earlier press releases mentioned the two screens would have minimal space separating them in the middle, unlike the DS. Oh well, those are just mockups... damnit I can't wait to see the actual design. D:

I know of the Front Mission 1st port to the DS, but there's other DS Front Mission games that so far have been Japanese only.

I'm hoping however that if Evolved does well enough, they might consider releasing those ones in English for the DS as well.

God damn it every time I see a DS thread I remember that I can't find my charger and I still haven't finished Spirit Tracks!

If it's a regular old DS, buy one quick. They genuinely don't make them any more ANYWHERE.

It took me about 2 months of searching to find a new one. Bought 2 just in case.

I still don't see how they're going to make the 3DS have 3D effects without the need for glasses.

Oh shit D:
And this isn't even the first time I've lost it. Much go search house.

I am frankly BLOWN AWAY at the reaction of the usually shitty gaming press to this device. Insane. The dev support is mind-blowing as well. That's one of the best lineups ever!! I just need a price and a date so I can be there to pick one up at midnight of whenever!!!!!!!

So very hyped. More so than for most console launches.

Resident Evil in 3D /o\

The 3DS is going to be mind-blowing. I can't wait to try it out.

Let's not get too excited before we know how cool the 3d effect is..

Where's the fun in not getting too excited? :p

This is the one I bought. Build quality seems poor, not sure I'm willing to chuck it around or travel too much with it, but it seems reliable when charging.

I got a Gameware USB charger today with ports for DS, DS lite, DSi and PSP and it was cheaper that I paid for the DS wall charger I bought before! DS is charging now

*crosses fingers that 3DS uses same charger port as the DSi*

Everyone foams at the mouth over this retarded 3D craze. Its a stupid gimmick that will just die again soon, just like it has every 6-8 years since the 40s.

Call me when it improves gameplay.
