n an effort to ensure top-quality in its next-gen games, Square Enix is building a "combined technology platform." In a press release issued this morning, Square noted the new platform would be used "throughout the company, utilizing proprietary technologies as well as third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 3."

Taku Murata, general manager, research and development division at Square Enix, expanded on Square's decision to use Unreal Engine 3. "The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development," Murata said. "However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform... I'm excited to be partnering with Epic Games in such an important area."

Oh man I'm excited

I don't like how they made the action scenes so eerily similar to Devil May Cry... and it certainly doesn't look like it's being done under the direction of the FFXII guy (my favorite Square dev by FAR).

On the bright side, it does look pretty... and will be interesting to see how it evolves from FFXII (which I'm liking a helluva lot right now, almost all the changes were major leaps in the right direction).

I haven't enjoyed a FF game since FF3 on the SNES. IMO...the games have gotten too complex. Don't get me wrong....still decent enough games.

so now the males can look much more feminine realistic?

You will note that FFXIII for the PS3 will not use this engine. It'll be games after that that will use it, but seriously, by the time FFXIII actually comes anywhere close to release, don't you think there might be a better engine out there? Maybe the Offset Engine will turn out to be the most amazing thing since sliced bread! I just wonder how long UE3 will be the fav of devs during this 'next-generation'? It almost certainly seems to indicate that Squenix is looking to be able to make games that cross the two big platforms with relative ease....

Wow, that's awesome news. I havn't played 12 yet, but I'm hoping 13 will kick ass. Looks good, and I can't wait to see what it will look like on the U3 Engine :D

Man! Play 12!!! Its my hands-down favorite in the series (besides Tactics, which wasn't a traditional FF anyway though). It is just about one of the best games I have ever played period!! Go get the damn thing!!!

I hear that the new FF for the PS2 doesn't have random battles.

About time...

Can't stand situations where your entire party has 1 HP and your about one meter away from an HP Restore/Save Point and then you get entered into a battle and get killed...

One of those throwyourcontrolleratthetvscreen kind of moments.

jeez

14FF games, already.

ZERO innovation.

Wouldn't the fact that only 2 of those (FFX and FFX-2) have anything to do with each other, and that all the others are completely different w/ their own mechanics, etc mean..

that there is innovation? :imu:

I need to buy it, and I plan on it. I thought 7 was the best still, while tactics was a VERY close 2nd. :D

And when you need to watch through a 20 minutes unskippable cut scene that you've already seen once.

What is best in life?

To crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of Stern's inner-homophobe. :p

I like a barechested sweaty muscular man who swings a sword ...what's not homoerotic about that? I mean besides tarzan there's not a more homoerotic character out there ...ok maybe Samson ...and perhaps Jebus, he looks great in a loincloth ..but it's almost always bloodstained ..which is yucky if you ask me

Hahaha! Yeah, there's a fine line between the muscular he-men of your fantasies and the ambiguous pretty-boys of mine. :cheese:
