Looks like the only JRPG I've been excited for in literally years will get English iteration and is making it's way stateside in early 2012 (sorry EU peeps, looks like you'll still need to import, but at least it'll be in English :)). Announced recently at TGS.

here's the beautiful trailer. watch this damn thing!: >>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBBV7ZVTocg<< The stills don't do this game justice AT ALL. So beautifully animated.

This seems familiar... and somewhat Pokémon. Is this a sequel? Art guy did other things?

They (Studio Ghibili) did the art and animation for every Miyazaki film.

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
Ponyo..etc

You lose ten points for not mentioning the most important one: Tonari no Totoro.

But yeah, looks pretty good.

Cool that PS3 is region free though, means that it'll reach a much broader audience.

Spirited Away
Saw that recently and really enjoyed it. The art was a big part in that was the art but I don't really know why but I don't like how the game looks from those screenshots.

Always considered it odd that the protagonist is a little boy. Basically entirely contrary to everything that Ghibli does.

Jumping the gun a little? Not aware of any Level 5 games that have made it to the US and not Europe. More to the point, Ghibli has been big enough in Europe for a while that someone would consider this game worthy of a full localisation into local languages. Thanks to the iron grip of Disney on the licenses in the US, we even have a few films that you'll never see, so nurrrr...

I thought this looked pretty great, until turn-based-combat. Also I don't have a PS3. :(

Yeah, this is an absolute NO-BRAINER for me. A gorgeous overworld and lots of towns to explore and a purple dragon airship?? Incredible. This will be the Level-5 RPG that I hoped WKC would be. Hoping to get word of the DS English release at Level-5's special event next month. Until then I have this...:E If it does make it over here, it HAS to include the spell book and everything.

And here is some detail on the package and the insanely beautiful book that comes with it.

And here are some other pics I took of actual screens. The overworld is amazing with monsters and combat like DQIX which is brilliant. Plus the shadows of clouds move over the landscape--it's beautiful. Too bad I am stuck in town and can't get back out there now for pics. :)

Aw, PS3 exclusive? (other than handhelds)

Whoa, that's some awesome stuff VoS.
I know! It's really an incredible achievement. I can't believe how much work went into this game! Then again, you can be 100% sure that Ghibli would not let something like their first foray into videogames be anything less than absolutely astounding. I desperately need them to localize this because my nearly non-existent Japanese knowledge will only get me so far and I HAVE to explore every inch of this game!! :)

Yah, but it makes perfect sense for a Japanese movie studio and a Japanese game developer.

Looks very tasty VoS. Where did you order it from?

What's with all the hype? I don't get it, tell me. :p

I got it from Play-Asia and it came pretty quickly. Sure, it cost a bit, but it was SO worth it not only for the game but that book...I cannot stress how ****ing awesome that book is. :)

Meh, I tend not to buy games that I can't understand for shit.

I guess I can wait for the localization.

Here's another couple of shots.

The one on the right is the overworld. On the bottom left is the shadow of a cloud drifting by. On the bottom right you can sort of see two of the enemies that sort of pop up from the ground as you walk around. You then have the chance to escape them or if you stay far enough away they won't bother you. Note my new outfit too--a proper adventurer's garb! A few subquests in the first city and it's yours! :) Now it is like the PS3 screenshots where in the first one he is in his modern clothing and when he gets to the city he gets the new outfit. Different games but still not without plenty of parallels. The shot on the right is a little grotto I found which is beautifully detailed and immediately reminded me of Chrono Trigger in that part where you walk through the forest to get to the castle very early on. There's huge plant with a huge mouth at the end of this little area but I don't know what I have to do to interact with it (yet!). Anyway, despite not knowing virtually any Japanese I am progressing nicely and now at the very least I can grind and grind until a good guide is available or the English localization drops. We have been told to "watch this space" on Twitter I think(?) in regards to a localization of the DS version so it certainly sounds imminent to be announced which has me extremely excited. I would go so far as to say it very well could be the next generation's Chrono Trigger.

Animation is probably the worst thing about modern games, visually speaking, so it's nice to see one that gets it so phenomenally right outside of BF3 and sports games. I wish I had a PS3 right now.

Agreed. A game could be a couple years behind the curve visually but have fantastic animations and it'd look better than new to me.
