So now that Nine Inch Nails has just finished their With Teeth tour, Reznor said at the last show that they were going back to the studio to make a new album and that it would be coming out much sooner than expected. I'm personally hoping that it's going to blow With Teeth out of the water. It wasn't really a bad album, but compared to ones such as 'The Downward Spiral', it wasn't anything ground breaking. Anyone else have an opinion on this??

(and I hope he puts Non-Entity on the next album)

I loved With Teeth as much as The Fragile or The Downward Spiral... NIN is constantly evolving and I am very curious to see what they'll put out next. I can't wait for the next album.

With teeth was fantastic. however the other albums overshadowed it as they were greater!

For me, about a third of With_Teeth was a bit too samey for me. With Teeth, The Line Begins To Blur, Love Is Not Enough, and Sunspots all have a very similar sound to me. But there are still standout tracks like All The Love In The World, Only, and Getting Smaller that keep it afloat.

I'm really excited to hear their new material though. I haven't actually given Non-Entity a listen yet, but I've heard nothing but good things from everyone here.

I enjoyed With Teeth much less than PHM, Broken, TDS and TF. Most of the songs, like Stigmata said, sounded alike but some songs made the album glow like All The Love In The World (which happens to be one of my favorite NIN songs). Comparing to previous albums (namely TDS and TF), WT kinda falls short for me. As Zeus said, it's not a bad album but it's over-shadowed by the other's greatness. For the next album, I wish that it went with more of the sound of TDS and has the epic feel and sound of TF. Although, this is pretty doubtful since Trent is off the drugs. Whatever the sound will be, I'm sure I'll still love it.

Edited after Ludah's post:

That's the one thing that I love about NIN: so much diversity and imstruments in all his songs. So many layers, sounds, beats... all in one song. If you listen to most of WT, eahc song only has a few sounds in 'em. When you listen to songs like The Becoming and Star****ers, you hear tons of sounds. One thing that was missing from WT was the noise. Noise (like static and such) added so much to a song even though it's an afterthought to most people.

With Teeth, while good, was underwhelming for me. After the wall of sound that was The Fragile, the concise sharp bursts didn't cut it as much. And like Stigmata, some of it sounded really samey. But oh man, there was still delicious gold like "All The Love" and "Only". And "Beside You In Time", while requiring some patience, is a very rewarding track to hear blowing out of your stereo system.

Hopefully the next album will see a return to the more texturally varied and multi-layered form of The Fragile. Because in the end, I think that With Teeth (despite its shortcomings) was exactly what Trent needed: a cathartic burst to clear out the debris before working up again.

There are still a few songs that retain his layered style. Every Day, Only, and to a lesser extent Beside You In Time, are far more layered than the other tracks on WT. Especially You Know What You Are, which had tons of underlying noise. That excessive layering is why I think it's one of the better tracks on WT, despite the fact that it is essentially one giant musical NIN cliché.

Beside You in Time is unbelievable, I love that song.

Agreed 100%. My favorite aspect of that song is the pulsing that's only one-thirty-second of a beat off :D

And on a completely unrelated note, is the audio on Sunspots supposed to be intermittent from 1:30-1:35 and 1:40-1:41? My disc might have been scratched when I copied it to my computer.

I never really liked Beside You In Time. It's annoying.

I think it ties in nicely with Right Where it Belongs (which, if you ask me is the best song on the album, but obviously not a very mainstream song like The Hand that Feeds).

But I'm hoping trent is going to make the next downward spiral...in terms of quality (and yes TDS is my favorite album pretty much ever, maybe with the exception of Fear Factory's 'Demanufacture')

as some of you have pointed out, the success of previous albums overshadowed With Teeth.
i suppose when a musician such as Trent refuses to churn out album after album sounding almost the same (just look at most other bands out there...same sound in different albums), certain albums will stand out more than other ones but for the record, i love the With Teeth album.

btw, have any of you listened to "Home" ?? its one of the bonus tracks off the Japanese import of With Teeth...awesome song, insane drums.

Trent has been working with Saul Williams over the past few months so perhaps maybe the new album is going to be a bit more hip-hop-ish? i don't know... but if anyone, Trent can pull it off as he has done with Down In It, Where Is Everybody? and Only.
one thing seems for sure tho...the next album will be more political...the lithos for this summer tour were a hint or so thats what most NiN fans think.

i wouldn't mind seeing more collaborations on the next album.
Peter Murphy
TV On The Radio
Saul Williams
Peaches
Queens Of The Stoneage
Autolux

these are bands who have opened for NiN in the past year or so...and a collaboration would be sweet :)

Saul Williams is a cool guy, he is best friends with my history teacher since childhood and he came to our school (which is the high school he went to/graduated from) to perform on stage during black history month. I saw him up close I was gonna say 'hi' and shake his hand but he was busy talking to my history teacher. Believe me when I say that man can spit out lyrics like you've never seen before.

But back on topic I hope trent doesn't go too far with the hip hop stuff...Down In It isn't exactly my favorite NIN song ever...lol. It would be cool if he made another masterpiece like 'Closer'/ 'Hurt' / 'Wish' on the next album/. And yes I have heard 'Home', only live though. Sounds great!

Right Where It Belongs is what seals the deal on With Teeth for me. Some songs may be a bit samey, but when you hit that song at the end, then it all just slips away and your left with a feeling of...emptyness yet fulfillment at the same time ...powerful song

Though i must admit it lacks the power of The Fragile which had some pounding songs Startf*ckers, We're In This Together etc. And others like La Mer for : )

Best thing about Trent's work is the changes in styles, can't wait for the next one

That's why I like The Fragile so much. One track is brutal, mechanical hatred. The next is a funky New Wave single. Next is an obnoxious powerhouse. Next is a simple yet swirling ballad.

It truly brought out the best in him.

the one thing i don't understand is why people like Star****ers.INC so much :p
that song is the weakest one on the album...and honestly? it does not even fit in with the rest of the songs...well thats MHO about it.

about The Fragile: Trent was going through a very rough time in his life and perhaps thats why he doesn't care/acknowledge the response of fans on this album.
plus, Interscope basically abandoned the album weeks after its release...there was zero marketing for the album...personally i never once saw an ad for The Fragile compared to all the ads i have seen for With Teeth.

its sad that something so beautiful came from a time where Trent was probably going through the worst part of his life.

Quoted for god damn truth. In my opinion, worst song on the whole album :p

Anyway, when I was on teh holidayz I managed to acquire the whole Nine Inch Nails main album set excluding PHM and remixes (I got Broken, if that counts). I'd say "With Teeth" was pretty darn good, but again...overshadowed by the other two. "Beside you in Time" gave me headaches with that off beat pulsing, and it did indeed go on and on and on. I think it took Trent a while to realise how annoying the sound was, and it wasn't until 4 minutes in (I think it was) that the song managed to dig itself out of the ditch. "The Collector" and "Getting Smaller" were sub-par as well. The rest was pretty good, and I did get that bonus Home track...the chorus was good but the rest was...iffy.

I'd say "The Fragile" was my favourite. Somewhat Damaged was a terrific intro, and the end of the song felt damn intense (Where the **** were you?). The rest of "Left" was good, with La Mer (is she supposed to be talking in a foreign language?) and the "We're in this together/The Fragile" pair being my favourite off both discs...it felt like one cohesive song to me. "The Way out is Through" and "Into the Void" were good starts to "Right". The rest wasn't as good as Left...the instrumentals were a bit of a let down compared to "Just Like You Imagined" and "Underneath it all" was Fragile's Beside you in Time. "The Big Come Down" was great though, as was "Please". Oh, and if you took Star****ers as a parody, then it is much more enjoyable.

My head is spinning at the moment, so I'll stop there until later.

P.S: 'No Thanks: You know who you ****ing are, the slave thinks he's released form bondage only to find a stronger set of chains.'

The woman in "La Mer" is speaking in french. The title translates into "The Sea".

On a digression - who here has "And All That Could Have Been"? I so wish I had been there for the performance of "La Mer". It's truly beautiful.

are you talking about the song? or the deluxe edition of the live album?
i have both the song and that live album.
the song is originally from the Still CD and is definitely a must have for NiN fans.

i prefer version two of Right Where It Belongs which can be found on the Japanese release of With Teeth..infact its one of 3 bonus tracks you get on the Japanese release, the other two tracks being Home and a DFA (Death From Above1979) remix of The Hand That Feeds.

I believe what she's saying in French is 'Nothing can stop me now,' which, if you're a NIN fan, you'd know why that's significant.

The DVD. And I have the song, but alas have not gotten my hands on Still yet.

She's saying more than that, the translated lyrics are in the liner notes

she's saying "and when the day comes i will become the sky and i will become the sea" and then some other stuff.

ahh.
did you access the hidden easter eggs on the DVD?
IMHO, the Reptile performance was the best on the DVD.

also, if you really want the Still CD, you can get from here for $10 USD or try your hand over at ebay.

Trent is on record saying there will be a deluxe edition of With Teeth with full artwork and a lyric booklet and apparently, they also filmed a couple of the winter tour shows for a future DVD release. ;)

edit: if anyone wants the studio version of Home, or version 2 of Right Where it Belongs, pm me.

i didn't want to start a new thread on this so i am posting in this one instead.
found this youtube link over at the ETS board of Johhny Cash's version of "Hurt" being used in a Nike tv spot. :|

nobody seems to know over at ETS if Trent owns the publishing rights to the original song but Trent isn't one to usually let others use his work commericially so yeah it sucks that once a song that meant so much is being whored out like this :(

That is a joke right...it's a joke right??? please say it is...

no joke :(
i am sure Trent makes some royalities on the song...but if he had his way, i doubt we'd ever see it used like this.

Sorry to butt in with nothing to add, but... since when is an album an era?

Disturbing video... annoying song.

Sorry to butt in with nothing to add, but... since when is an album an era?

With NIN, the different albums are considered eras, the performances are different in every era, especially with line-up changes.

Pretty Hate Machine was the first era of course, which i dont know much of

The Downward Spiral era was probably the craziest, I mean go to youtube.com and look up "NIN woodstock" to watch their Woodstock '94 concert, was crazy

Fragile was all about the Fragility tour

With Teeth is of course the lastest with the completely new line-up

someone posted a link to some With Teeth mashups featuring present and past bands/musicians over at The Spiral boards and well im not sure if people here are fans of mashups but in case anyone is interested, here is the link.

i haven't listened to them all but i did like the "Another spot in the sun, Part2: Pink Floyd"

anyone like mashups?

I thought the 50 Cent vs. NIN mashup was great, even though I abhor 50 Cent.

In my opinion, it would be awesome of the next album was more intense, a la Downward Spiral, but also contained epic instrumentals like "Just Like You Imagined" from The Fragile, and also included soft melodic songs to get a break from the intensity. Actually i have no idea what i'm talking about, but i'm sure whatever Reznor does will be good.

You just want Downward Spiral fused with The Fragile! :D
