Okay, only recently did I really get into grunge rock which i think is totally awesome, various bands like soundgarden, incubus, pearl jam ect. rhcp perhaps. velvet revolvers, guns n roses. and I just found out about Nirvana (i am still a rock music noob). So I have 2 questions:

1. Can I please know some really good songs from Nirvana.

2. Could you recommend me some other good grunge rock music (and their music) bands.
such as any good songs from guns and roses ect.

Thx alot! (I LoVe GrUnGe ROCK!!) best ever, for now..

The most popular are Smells Like Teen Spirit (the anthem of that era) and Come as You Are. Both from the album Nevermind, I think. Lithium, Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies are also awesome.

grunge rock... various bands... incubus... rhcp... velvet revolvers, guns n roses.
Wha-?

Anyway, these are a few of my favorite Nirvana songs, in no particular order:

Rape Me
Drive
Lithium
Sappy
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle
Polly
Mexican Seafood
The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie cover)
Negative Creep
Dumb

Just download their discography off a torrent, it's not a large file. 3 studio albums, a few live albums and some compilations is all it will be.

Nevermind is a very good album( overrated though)

In Utero is their best album, it's underrated imo and a hard listen at first, it contains few of the pop sensibilities which nevermind made them famous for.

Unplugged in newyork is a great live album( actually its my favorite live album), its so well done that if Cobain didn't talk to the audience between songs you would never be able to tell that it's a live album to begin with.

1. Lithium
Lounge Act
Aneurysm
Floyd the Barber
Opinion
Polly mtv unplugged
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Serve the Servants
Heart-shaped Box
Rape Me
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle
Dumb
Very Ape
Pennyroyal Tea
Tourettes

Just get all their albums, there aren't many.

2. Guns n Roses and Incubus aren't in the grunge category remember.

Try these Mudhoney songs - Hate The Police, Mudslide, Suck You Dry, Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More, Touch Me I'm Sick, You Stupid Asshole.

Try these Pixies songs - Where is my Mind, Gigantic.

Try these Alice in Chains songs - Would, Bleed the Freak, Down in a Hole, Junkhead, Rooster.

Buy Mother Love Bone's only album. They would've been the next Guns n Roses had the lead singer not died from a heroin OD. Try these songs - Crown of Thorns, Stargazer, Stardog Champion :p:p This is Shangrila.

As stardog pointed out not all of those are grunge rock. However if you like Guns N' Roses you probably like older rock to.

Take a look at Red Hot Chilli Peppers if you havn't.
I'd also take a look at a song called "The Way" by Fastball. It's a one hit wonder, but it's a damn good song.

I'd take a look at:
Motley Crue
AC/DC
Aerosmith
Def Leppard

I love Motley Crue!
-Kickstart my heart (Absolute favorite song)
-Livewire
-Dr. Feelgood
-Helter Skelter
-Primal Scream
And a ton more songs.

Plateau, Lake of Fire and About A Girl are awesome Nirvana songs that weren't mentioned here yet.

Not really a grunge rock fan but some of the Nirvana songs are fantastic, and Kurt Cobain is a legend.

Grunge is my favorite genre, welcome to the club

Grunge bands you should look at:
Pearl Jam
Mudhoney
MotherloveBone
Stone Temple Pilots
Alice in Chains

Grunge supergroups containing members of the aforementioned bands
Temple of the Dog- Soundgarden + Pearl Jam
Audioslave- Soundgarden + Rage Against the Machine
Velvet Revolver- Stone Temple Pilots+ Guns N' Roses
Army of Anyone- Stone Temple Pilots + Fuel

Also try PostGrunge, the transition between grunge and nu-rock starting in 1995-2000. These bands were a softer, more commercial version of grunge.
Foo Fighters - Nirvana with a different singer
Bush - UK group that can be considered "grunge"
Creed - A great band tinted by Christianity
Puddle of Mudd- Long derided as a Nirvana "copy"
Everclear - Much lighter, happier post grunge
Live

Kurt Cobain is overrated

Listen to some Temple of the Dog, they've only got one album but they're a great band usually overlooked

Agreed, Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were much better singers. But Cobain was more popular.

Eddie Vedder all the mother f'ckin way! :D

Actually, his lyrics are much less random once you get some insight into the first 2/3rds of his life. I find them pretty easy to identify with.

Advanced grunge bands:

Meat Puppets
Melvins
Pixies
Sonic Youth
L7
Neil Young (Considered to be the godfather of grunge, especially his rock albums)
The Jesus Lizard
Dinosaur Jnr.
Nirvana
Mad Season
Screaming Trees
The Presidents of the United States of America
Jerry Cantrell / Alice In Chains
Soundgarden
Failure

If you really want to explore grunge properly, get songs or albums from the above mentioned bands!

Cobain was more of a generational icon than a great musician.

That's because if they messed up they'ed redo the song. It isn't really a live album as to just the band playing with a TV-like audience.

I can't believe people didn't mention Breed in the songs to listen to...

Oh man..

OH MAN, looks like Ive gotta do a hell load of research to know more bout these bands and songs. google and myspace here i come. thx hl2.net :)

R.E.M. did a good grunge album called monster

ahh, rem, only heard one song from them called "the great beyond" and it was awesome

That's not grunge, REM are not a grunge band, just they wanted to do a grunge album. Listen to "bang and blame" it's one of their best songs.

I'd also take a look at a song called "The Way" by Fastball. It's a one hit wonder, but it's a damn good song.

LOL, haven't heard that one mentioned in a while.

Lithium is Nirvana's best song.

rem started as college/alternative rock and moved into pop ..definately not grunge ..love their early stuff

Check out some Mark Lanegan, formerly of the screaming trees!

Get the albums Bubblegum, and Ballad of Broken Seas (which he recorded with Isobel Campbell, of belle and sebastian)

Yes, but Monster was their fantastic attempt to do a grunge album. I'm also a fan of their early stuff, radio free Europe is of course fantastic. I really like Fables of the Reconstruction but Automatic for the people is my fav album

Alice in Chains FTW. Layne Staley blows Cobain out of the water when it comes to vocals IMO. Jerry Cantrell is a fantastic guitarist and his songwriting skills rival cobains. Dirt is considered AIC's best album, so get it first.

I think that this is one of the earliest grunge songs ever recorded (1983, played in 1984)

Melvins - Matt Alec.

That's Matt Lukin on the bass (Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam named a song after him). This was just before Kurt Cobain was the roadie for this band too I think, I don't know if he knew the singer at this time.
