No BSOD when my computer crashes

Yay, another thread from me! Ugh.

My computer is crashing a lot lately, and I'd like to think it is not monitor related.

Lately I've been experiencing computer crashes frequently. Starting around a week ago I think before the last Lost aired.

What happens, is my monitor shuts off, going into off mode. My computer is still on, yet I can't turn the monitor back on to view things. And the times it has happened when I have had sound going, the sound starts to loop indicating an actual computer crash, and nothing to do with my monitor. And my monitor still seems to be working just fine, sometimes it doesn't crash for a day or more, and I'll be using it all day no problems.

What puzzles me most, is that I'm not experiencing a Blue Screen of Death, so I have no idea what it could possibly be. If it were memory related or anything normal, I would get that BSOD indicating as such... but what do I do when there is no BSOD?

To get the BSOD do this (in XP)

- Control Panel
- Performance and Maintenance
- System
- Advanced Tab
- Startup and Recovery - Settings Button
- Disable automatic restart

Probably video card related. If the card cuts out...how are you going to see a BSOD?

Evo, I already have that stuff activated. I get a BSOD on all other errors.

And Asus, I didn't think of that... but I don't see what could be going wrong with my video card. It's pretty new and the thing never overheats! So I'm confused.

I reapplied drivers, and for the longest time I thought things were going fine, but then today it happened again.

No ways perhaps that I could test it somehow? I mean, the card runs fine even when I open tray tools and check for artifacts which makes it heat up waaaay more than serious load I put it under during games and stuff, and these crashes are not happening while I'm gaming, but rather while the computer is idle. So I don't think it's overheating, but maybe a power problem? I can't understand that either... as my PSU is also pretty new and well powered.

<cries> Tons and tons of people are reporting the same problems I'm having... that it's like a faulty digital voltage thing that is acting up or overheating or something.

I doubt I could even get an RMA from newegg... I bought the card less than a year ago, but I don't have the original packaging and now I'm stuck with a 6 month old card that is faulty.

I'm never buying ATI again. Only ever gives me trouble with their stupid cards that crap out.

Maybe this can fix it... going to give it a shot. http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/34746

It was working fine for the half year or so that I've had it. Not one problem until just last week.

If it's less than a year old, shouldn't it still be under manufacturer warranty? If it's a common problem, you might not even have to pay to ship it back. Who makes your card?

HIS makes my card.

Their website for returns says to check the individual vendors... wtf. :dozey: Newegg is my vendor I bought it from... but I can't RMA it without having everything it came with, including the stupid cardboard box.

Went to Catalyst 7.7 drivers... did an ATI Tray Tools artifact scan for 2000 seconds, roughly 33 minutes. The processor didn't get above 76 degrees celsius and no artifacts and no crash doing that.

Ah... I had the same RMA problem with a power supply. If you contact NewEgg, they should be able to get you contact info for the vendor so you can RMA it through them.

I think it's worth to note that so far since reverting to catalyst drivers 7.7, I have not yet had a crash, and as before I said I did a 33 minute run with ati tray tools which brought my cpu up to 80 degrees celsius almost with no problems.

My comp crashes in a similar fashion once I get to about 72C. Generally I can keep it well below that, but maybe I'll roll back to an older Catalyst set and see if it gives me more leeway...
