it's not impossible to get a "pirated" version of half-life 2 from the internet, or indeed from ebay. i downloaded a "free" version after i bought my copy over steam to see what it was like. it's not bad really, but i'd prefer to use the real thing (and do).

what the OP bought may well have been a pirated version, and was probably a full version, not the alpha leak from 2003 (i've seen pictures of those, the cover was different)
