No instruction manual? What a load of crap.

Just posted in the Valve Info Thread.

That's bullshit. Why no instruction manual? When was the last time you bought a game without a manual? Furthermore, he tells us if we do want an instruction manual, we have to go out and pay more money for it.

I don't know about you, but I'm smart enough to figure out/set the controls on my own.

I'm surprised to see some people get so angry that there won't be an instruction manual in the box with Half-Life 2! I think they should cancel their pre-orders - lack of an instruction manual is just such a big disappointment :D

pathetic how some of you guys flame for such a valid point.
manuals are just plain traditional things that come with games, get over it. some people actually enjoy reading the stuff that usually always comes in the manual that is not the keys + buttons. you dont have to get so defensive and flame happy about it.

is scary how some of you guys can act.
im sure if the game just left out the ending, some of you would flame the guys who go "wtf, wheres the ending." and say "stfu, we dont need no stinking ending"

I'm happy that there's no instruction manual. Those things are pretty pointless, and this means Valve has the confidence to believe in the intuitive play experience of their game. Now that's what I'm looking for in a game :) That said, I imagine there will be a card with install instructions/default controls listed on it. But that's all that's needed.

For me, this further takes the edge off of buying the game from Steam. But I like manuals, and I was hoping the manual would be included as a .pdf in the Steam pack. Oh well... not to much of a loss.

It is lovely to see how fanboys defend the greed of a compnay.

Nope. I am also not bothered in the slightest.

OMG Apocolypse you loose your 10 page booklet that tells you left mouse button is shoot and Gordon is a scientist, life is over, hl2 sucks. Grab your shotguns its rioting time.

Why does anyone NEED an instruction manual? Why, oh why oh why? A quick start guide is all you need, and that's what you're getting.

Maybe if you weren't such a dick you would read the thread. We don't need a manual, but this is just another example of how Valve is cheaping out on the consumer. They don't give us a price break on Steam (don't get started on this topic), they don't include a proper multiplayer mode (instead opting to stick to an outdated, five year old free mod) and now we're not getting manuals.

How the hell did this topic go on for so long? Jeez, I would never have posted it if I thought it was going to be such a fanboy magnet.

Valve didnt cheap out. People need to stop saying that. Whatever not going to argue about this. Pointless.

I don't think it is THAT big of a deal, I wish there was a manual but I don't really care I guess. The last manual I read was to JK2... I was in the bathroom for a while and thought what the hell :).

Why are you blaming Valve when this is most likely Vivendi's doing? They are the ones who absorb these sorts of costs, so it's not like Valve is saving any money.

And I suspect there are legal reasons why the Steam price can't be lower than the RRP.

Let me go on the record of saying that even though I may be a fanboy (verdict is still out on that one), I didn't like the MP thing and the whole Activation thing, but I really dont' care if there is a manual. I'm not flaming anyone by saying that, it's just my opinion.

I doubt the reason they aren't including it has to do with cost. The game will sell buttloads anyway. I'll bet Valve or Vivendi just said, "Why bother?" I mean, there isn't that much to know that you wouldn't already know from the first one (Which is included, right?) or you will learn along the way.

About the only things they could put in there are weapon descriptions, vehicle descriptions, etc. but you are not supposed to know these things in advance, and therefore that could be a bit of a spoiler.

Well, at any rate, if people really need to get a manual, they can send me their email address and I'll send them a hand-made color manual in PDF format and all they have to do is send me 1 dollar (US). Oh, and they will have to wait a week or two until I get done playing the game. Gotta have priorities!

I think it's pretty cool that they are doing away with physical manuals. Hopefully it's because they've made everything else intuitive enough, and built in the help directly into the game. You don't need an manual when the game IS the manual.

Thats exactly why they cant change the price.
