Now when VHE 3.5(?) will came with Half-Life 2 we can hope that some of the old buggs will be gone...

As far as I know, Valve is still using radiosity for lightmaps in their BSP files for Half-Life2. That means, yes, you will still have to wait hours for 'rad' to build the lightmaps.
