Is the FPS genre like ... dead?

I mean what titles are expected to come out this year?

I can only think of STALKER (but it may never come out just like Duke Nukem 4ever), a Doom 3 Gravity Gun expansion pack and finally the HL2 Alyx & Dog expansion.

That's all! 1 new game!!! :x

... and even Stalker looks like vapourware (it'll probably end up shite too)

What about FEAR or BF2 - they both look prety neat.

Brothers In Arms, Pariah, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Battlefield 2, SWAT 4 to name a few...

FPS genre is far from dead, and I don't think it could ever die. There are just so many mediocre FPS games that no one can even name all of them. It wouldn't be a surprise if FPS games were the best selling genre, well maybe after sports games

....

Right...ok...

Anyway, there's plenty of FPS games coming out. As mentioned before Pariah, SWAT 4, Rainbow Six: Lockdown, FEAR to name a few. Far from dead.

Unreal 3
F.E.A.R
Half-Life 3
Battlefield 2
Brothers in Arms
Brothers in Arms 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R

I'd say it's far from dead.

Unreal 3 isn't going to be here until 2006 or later, we have no clue when HL3 is going to be released, BiA2....grasping at straws here.

But Red Orchestra (www.redorchestragame.com) might be going retail. The FPS genre is far from dead.

It doesnt matter when they're out, the point I was making is that the genre isn't dead as long as there are these games in development.

All of the games i've mentioned are currently in development.

I really doubt Half-Life 3 is already in development, Valve have enough things going on at the moment.

I know that half-life 3 is in development, and was in development even before half-life 2 shipped (storyline, concepts).

They're probably already creating the content. It doesn't need a new engine so it's likely we'll get HL3 some time next year, before Unreal 3 blows us away.

How'd you know?

Yea I think they are doing what lePobz said.

Thats what they did with HL2...wouldn't it be logical that they did the same for HL3?

Pff. I ask that guy all the time and he has none of the answers.

PS. IGN did a two-part roundup of the PC shooters (Doesn't include forthcoming Console only stuff like Timesplitters Future Perfect). There are a few "Big" titles on the horizon - F.E.A.R. , S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , Brothers In Arms and Battlefield 2 spring to mind. Personally, i'm none to excited about them. The only game I medically need right now is Bioshock...

Shooter Roundup PT 1 Shooter Roundup PT 2

Edit: I'm quite excited about Pariah I suppose.

Behave, Quake 4 is based on the Doom 3 engine, which is a bag of **** compared to next gen engines such as U3.

Yes, and we all know how the engine used dictates the quality of a game. ;)

It does to people that love eye candy and new technology... people like me, infact :P

He said quake 4 is where the future's at ... this is just blatently untrue. It may be a very good game, but it won't bring anything new to the genre.

And Sepp - I emailed gabe about HL3 before HL2 was released, he told me it would be based on Source and would be released in a much shorter timeframe than HL2 was to HL1 ... i'm guessing that it would not go head to head with Unreal3, maybe the valve guys have decided (since seeing the U3 tech demo) to build a new engine for HL3. I don't know, but I do know what gabe told me before. If you don't want to believe me then that's great, I couldn't give a rats arse.

I just hope we're not in the situation of having Half-Life 3 being built on the source engine released alongside or after Unreal 3, they're in different leagues.

There are alot of unconfirmed details about Q4, noone really know's what is going to be released [Aside from the obvious]. They might have some nice suprises for us.

I'd much rather we got plenty of games using current gen engines that having to wait for the next batch. Where's the fun in getting a couple of decent titles and then having to wait five years just to repeat the process again? (which seems to be the case these days)

Source, Doom 3, Far Cry etc all look fine ........ how about we actually play them? ;) Crazy I know.

you forgot 2 fps that looks promising too

area 51:the true dont atract me so much but I hav heard things of that game that sounds nice

project snowblind:what interest me about this game is that you could hav some skills or abbilities and stuff like that that sounds nice

I posted this 2 games cuz the topic starter is saying that stalker is the only new one

but stalker is the most promising of all

No, Gabe. Before HL2 was even released.
I think he is right

I read in a magazine long time before the release of HL2 that valve say that HL3 was planed, but I think they maybe should be rewriting the storyline and stuff

It's nice to know my word means absolutely nothing on these forums until there's people to back me up.

Ah well.

Ah well.

i know the interview ur referring to when Gabe talked about HL3 but even then, i doubt HL3 will released in 2005 considering Valve's history of release dates being pushed back time and time again.

the earliest i would even guess about HL3 would some time after E3 2006...and even that i think is too soon considering all the projects have have on their plate.

I believe you Pobz but i dont think it'll be out next year, with hl2 expansions, updates, and team fortress 2 in the works, i dont think Valve will have the man power or the will to start actual work on HL3 until atleast 2006.

A lot of good fps games coming out.

Pariah
Stalker
FEAR
Project Snowblind
SWAT4
DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil

+ all the ones we dont know about.

At least. To be honest, I'm more looking forward to the HL2 expansions at the moment. After all, it's more plausible that they're currently in development, they'll come out sooner, and I'm not done with City 17 yet. Not by a long shot.

As for Brothers in Arms? I wish people would stop making WW2 games - it's getting stupid and a bit boring. It's formulaic, requires little to no imagination and most of all they accurately document - as do most WW2 films, actually - how the US single-handedly saved the entire world from Nazi danger with no help from any other nations. CoD was the only game to right that wrong and for that, I'm glad. That game was good. But still - think of something more original!

yup.. and for HL3 to be released this year, Valve would have already needed to hire more staff.. which they haven't done..

i feel the same way as u concern WW2 fps games.
i was tired of em after BF but of course it didn't stop there..
not only that, Gearbox are the pple working on Brothers in Arms right? aside from the SP of Opposing Force, Gearbox did a horrible job for Opposing Force's MP patches... and if that is an indication of things to come, i am staying away from Brothers in Arms as much as possible.

Yes, did you read about how much effort they put into the story, and the mere fact that you can move barrels around whilst theyre leaking petrol, and create walls of flames propels high in my wanted list.
