No More Mouse + Keyboard?

Does anyone ever get tired of using mouse + keyboard? I was thinking of creating a prototype two-handed machine gun controller + directional foot pedal. Would this be better than mouse + keyboard or is it a bad idea? I would love to add force feedback to the gun so you have some recoil when you blast headcrabs ;) What do you think, bad idea, good idea? Thanks!!

And and and, dont forget the arcade thingy, with the holster for your gun. And....um no, I would prefere KB+Mouse more than anything.

I find that mouse + keyboard can take away from the experience of the game. When I get into a game I want to completely FEEL the sence that I am there, so I want to blast things with a gun, not a plastic mouse ;)

Tricky. What I would suggest is developing something that replaces the keyboard and mouse, but retains their functionality.

You need half a keyboards worth of keys under your hand for it to work well. Good idea though, I say go for it.

Hmmmmm.... And I suppose voice recognition wouldn't be the best alternative to half a keyboard of keys... Maybe a sub-keyboard built into the gun accessable to the left hand (assuming the right is the triggerer) Maybe touch sensitive keys so you would be able to quickly use them...

Keyboard + mouse = superiority.

I don't like gamepads, joystics, etc...

Hazar Dakiri, why do you like kb + mouse so much? Wouldn't it be cooler to use a gun if it worked just as well?

But the fact (probably) is that it won't work as well.

Besides, it would be way more expensive and take up much more room.

"Probably not work as well": I am thinking of a hybrid mouse + joystick + foot pedal; a perfect hybrid of mouse precision, joystick functionality and real life walking/spinning/jumping movements.

I believe it would work BETTER than a mouse + kb , think about when you need to spin around 360 to kill a headcrab behind you, with a mouse + kb you would have to move the mouse 180 then lift it up/move it (because you run out of deck space) and then move it the other 180 degrees. By this time the headcrab is already busy turning you into a zombie... With a gun + foot pedal this is simpler; just move `n shoot.

"More expensive": perhaps around $100 - $150 (I'm only guessing). BUT it would be way better and cooler than mouse + kb ;)

"Take up more room": no it would not. a two handed gun (similar to the M16-A4) for aiming/firing/extra programmable buttons, and a foot pedal for walking/spinning/jumping/crouching/sprinting movements.

Doesn't anyone share in my enthusiasm of actually using a GUN not a plastic toy mouse?

no. others would argue you're using a plastic toy gun, when a mouse is usefull computer hardware. You seem to like the arcade format of play, and PC games, especially shooters don't work the way arcade shooters do. Unless you're game is a VR world, or there is some kind of thought to computer interface where your character does whatever you're thinking, there will not be anything more precise than KB+mouse. because you ahve to factor in movement, typing, every other game option on keys, nothing is more intuitive than mouse pointing. Pointing a plastic gun at my monitor would only draw me out of the game experience.

foot pedals would NOT be better for turning. Think about it. Most of use are honed fps gamers. it doesn't take long at all to point our xhair where we want it... now look at foot pedals. you have to step on the pedal for direction (already taking longer than twitching the mouse) then you have to deal with how hard to step on it if it is even pressure senstive and if it's not- you'd just have one turn speed no matter what the situation. that doesn't sound like an advantage to me. Then if you go to far you have to stop and switch pedals that takes even longer. And how would you get your character to look up and down? I'd also find it incredibly uncomfortable to have to constantly be stepping on something and holding it down if i'm playing for a long time.

Will the gun have some gyro balance thing to know when you want it to look down, have to keep it parallel to the floor at all times if you want to keep your view level?

maybe u should stick with time crisis 3 or something at your local arcade. or the ones on your console where you just shoot and it runs you around.

peripherals are a thing of the past! I play games and use the computer with MY MIND! The nice labcoat people stuck metal thingies in my head, but the agony... err... discomfort, is going away! They usually do't care if I talk on forums because they think I would never talk about t to... SHOOT! NO! STOP! PLEASE HELP Mnmkasdn;ahjcx,m mcx n

Rocketman9mm, ah perhaps you are correct if I made it as you say, but that is actually very far from my design: ONE eight-axis foot pedal ("floor joystick") - tilting your foot forward would cause you to move forward, tilting your foot to the right would cause you to strafe right, etc.. If you press down on the pedal you will crouch, if you lift up you will jump. There will be a strap warn over the top of your foot to keep very precise control.

The GUN will act exactly like a mouse in air (no not a gyro mouse, they are to slow, we need instant control in fps), think of a joystick held horizontal; in essence you bend the barral of the gun to look around, extracting the exact x/y location you are aiming just as a mouse moves in x/y.
