There i was, innocently watching television on my winfast TV card and all of a sudden, the monitor has no signal...I can still here Neighbours in the background as the speakers still grind out the aussie voices, which leaves me utterly confused.
This has never happened before... So i fiddle with the monitor but alas, no signal.
I reboot the pc, crap no beep... the fans spin but the computer as a whole does not boot up at all. :O
There i sit, with a suddenly non working computer. I worry, i panic. And i settle for taking the thing down to my local pc repair shop to find out which componant has obviously gone. I do not have a spare pc or parts to test each componant.
So, i slip a tenner into the guys pocket and he agree's to take the pc and find out whats wrong for me. The man was humorous, he either knew nothing about computers or was just trying to make me laugh, he said a few odd things i feel i should share.
"you plan to upgrade to a shuttle?... you wont get your motherboard in there..."
"hmm... all them fans you have wont fit in a shuttle..."
etc...
A day later i get a call, he says the motherboard has gone...although he tested the graphics card and it works fine. So the next day i order a new motherboard, same model, make etc for £35, allot of money for a student, and I toddle off to the shop to pick up the pc, get it home and open it up.
It looks like he hasn't touched it whatsoever, but hey, that might be his professionalism to put all my wires back exactly where they were and make the thing look exactly like it did, he even left all the dust in there for me, what a nice guy...
Anyway, me and a few friends work to replace the motherboard and plug everything in, double checking everything... and yes, it does not boot. Exactly the same problem.
Im going back to the shop later to see if they'll reimburse me for the price of the motherboard and a refund for his "checking" it.... afterall, i did ask him to find out what was wrong with the thing and he wasted £35 of my money.
Considering my pc case is really heavy, being steel, i've decided to buy my upgrade early, a shuttle. Im hoping my graphics card really does work and I can get my shuttle to work fine with its 64bit processor, new ram and old 9800 pro.
Anyway, does anybody know what could be wrong with my old computer? i loved the little minstrel and i'd like to get it working again, could it be the graphics card? tv card? psu? cpu? some help would be handy, i do not want to buy more parts that arent the cause of the problem.
And what an idiot computer repair man....
