I remember there were white vertical blinds in a bink video. The one where Gordan goes into a building and blocks the door. Then he makes his way to the roof. On windows were blinds that would move with the gunshots that were comming from outside. I also remember the 'swinging I-beam and dumpster' scene that they left out. I thought that they were good ideas. Maybe I just missed those traps.

...Please use the search button, people! It's there for a reason, for God's sake!

First of all I did and there wasn't a topic devoted to this one issue and second I searched for it again and there were onlt posts that were written before the game was out. Those few posts that mentioned 'white vertical blinds' only discussed the probablity that they would break from gunshots and not why they were excluded from the final game.

Did you(BetaMaster-bater) even search for 'white vertical blinds' before suggesting that do the exact same thing? I think not.

No, but if you tried the more specific search, it'd work. Try "Traptown."
But sorry, I'll answer your question:
Valve has not actually revealed why they were removed, I believe, but they probably were taken out because they would be obvious traps, and the house was just a techdemo, showing off the Source engine, with in-game action.

Sorry I don't know the titles of the videos. It's been so long. I didn't think they were obvious traps. Were they more obvious then a blade attached to a motor? More obvious then a trashed car attached to a pully/lever? I thought the point of traptown was to make the traps as clear and predictable as possible. I guess they were taken out because they wern't obvious enough.

a lot of the game was reworked/redone/or in a few instances, simply cut out.

the blinds, dumpsters, swinging beams, fall into one of those categories.

for whatever reason Valve decided to change things... however the end result was and is phenominal.

(so in short, you didn't miss them, they merely were not there :) )

it seems to me the whole game is a showoff for the engine.

Actually I believe most of the videos were "faked"--ie scripted and so on.

I think that was true, based on that "final hours of HL2" article...

That part IS actually in the game it is just a little different. It starts out you run out of a cement building and wind up facing the house with the washing machine and the white blinds, they just changed that scenerio of soldiers comming after you and escaping through the roof. If you want to play it go download the warez version of the leaked source. Haha jk.

FangsFirst, Most of the game was scripted, i see no reason why the techdemos would not be... and anyway, the scripting made Halflife Halflife, and Halflife2 its sequel. I wouldn't count it as "faked", unless they said it was an AI demo...

Oh no, I know it was scripted, but I mean more completely scripted. I dunno, check the section on the E3 demo in the aforementioned article. Here, lemme grab a link...
(basically, as I recall, it said that the videos showed things that weren't literally possible INGAME, or something to that effect)

there it is.
here's the part I refer to:
"And then he added a pithy footnote: 'I'd like to point out the E3 demo was one big fake by Valve.'"
hmm skimming I guess they never verified this, but it was discussed earlier in the article as well, as I recall anyway.

But yeah, that's what I was referring to. That it wasn't in any way actual game play or actual whatevers. May or may not be true and all.

Ye that was the Trapdown vid ur thinking of, took that section out.

Well in theory, yes, Valve have created a stunning engine, naturally they need to create something that shows the best aspects of it.

Most developers who create their own engine work in that manor.

The traptown part is in the game, its just changed a lot. It's part of the way through ravenholm. I recognised it straight away, well, the building layout anyway.

to be honest I think they reason they took out that particular traptown part because you would have had a lot of users coming in going

[Cartman voice] Ha ha ha ha haaaa ha all those scenes were scriiiiiiipted, na na na na naaaaa na [/Cartman voice]
