Try verifying your game files after a fresh install.... goto the XP run dialogue and type in
steam://validate/220 - HL² SP
steam://validate/320 - CS:S
If that doesnt work check your hard drive for corruption using CHKDSK /F
If that don't work not sure what to do???

M files on my laptop were corrupt. chkdsk didn't fix anything.

HL2M hey!! Well, i'm verifying the files, but i have another problem, my Garry's mod v8.2 opens up the load screen with the little blue grav gun, then it closes. but thats not becasue of hl2 missing files, it did that before my hl2 wasn't working.

You need HL2 to fully work before you can play Garry's Mod, because Garrys mod plays off of HL2 nbasically...

Hey guys... He said that gmod didn't work even BEFORE HL2 crapped out on him... Therefore, I would suggest trying to reinstall gmod if you have not... Try Deleting the files in the gmod folder, keep the screenshots and maps and such if you would like to...
Then install the newst version.
Good luck w/ HL2, like these people are saying, if your game still says the files are corrupt and/or missing, it may be a read error, I'd try running a "chkdsk /r". I believe the first three 'stages' of chkdsk /f are included in /r... So, it'll do a nice deep thorough scan, may take up to an hour, though... Did it the other day on a friend's computer...
Anyway... A defrag is always a good idea... And this is all only if the validate didn't fix this stuff...

But a bit more details would make it easier to understand what's going on. Right now, all I know is that you can't load up the game, and are getting some sorta missing file error. For one thing, what's the file?
Edit: Forgot to mention, try loading up the windows automated repair console thingy (not automated in anyway btw
) and typing CHKDSK /R.Similar threads
