Yeah, I just heard it on the news today. They gunned down a 50-year old woman, a tourist because she reportedly wouldn't obey the guards' commands to halt, at 4AM.

Although the Puppet Army wouldn't explain how the woman was able to, in the middle of the night, cross over a 2-meter electrified fence, and walk a kilometer towards the north when she had been specifically warned not to thousands of times.

She was obviously a South Korean spy, the N. Koreans were in the right.

Lovely news source you have in your original post.

odd, Numbers I thought you'd be all supportive of this sort of thing ..guys in spiffy jackboots killing defectors from the north because they're most likely commie spies

oh right this happened in north korea ..it's not ok when they do it but perfectably acceptable when the south does it

she was a captalist spy/agent provocateur that threatened the security of a nation, she sacrificed her life for the good of the fatherland ..it's all a matter of perspective, Numbers

Only in America.

QFT. Teach her to be out of the kitchen. Maybe next time when she is told to make a sandwhich she should listen.

Hey guys...why don't women need drivers licenses? Because there is no road between the kitchen and the bedroom! Oh snap!

Why did she want to cross the DMZ anyway (I assume that's what it is, but your source doesn't seem to be apparent)? I don't want to say "she had it coming", but...

A better question is, who the heck is dumb enough to be a tourist in North Korea... And better yet, where was her "guide"? :|

Try to be understanding.

She was obviously an unstoppable force. An entire army may not have been able to restrain her.

When you have a 50 year old female tourist refusing to understand a foreign language, death by firing squad is the best solution.

Gee don't listen to the guy with the gun kthxblam.

she was confused because the soldier was speaking north korean ..they dont have words like surrender or stop ...pretty sure he said something like YOU DIE NOW

lol @ you people :p

I think I should have been more clear on the OP. Here: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200807/200807110031.html

S.Korean Tourist Shot Dead in North
A South Korean tourist was shot dead by a North Korean soldier in the North’s Mt.Kumgang on Friday morning. South Koreans have died in accidents and from illness since tours to the scenic resort began in 1998, but this was the first death by North Korean gunfire.

The incident could prove disastrous for inter-Korean ties.

Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyoun said Park Wang-ja (53) from Seoul's Nowon district died around 5 a.m. while taking a stroll on the beach near the hotel where she was staying. She had left the hotel at 4:33 a.m.

Quoting what North Korean authorities told tour operator Hyundai Asan, Kim said Park strayed into an off-limits military area and, instead of stopping when a North Korean soldier asked her to, fled, and the soldier fired. According to the North, Park wandered 1 km northward into the restricted area. Soldiers repeatedly asked her to stop and fired a warning shot, but she ran away.

Park's body was laid out at a Sokcho hospital at 1 p.m. after being taken across the border. The hospital says she has two gunshot wounds, one in the back penetrating the chest and the other to the left hip, and the cause of death was respiratory failure from the gunshots. Park started a three-day Mt.Kumgang tour on Wednesday. Hotel CCTV captured her leaving the hotel early Friday morning.

The South Korean government immediately halted tours to the mountain until the case is closed. Kim said the government will take additional measures depending on the results of an investigation. Hyundai Asan will withdraw the 1,263 South Korean tourists currently in the North through Sunday.

President Lee Myung-bak expressed his sorrow and ordered his secretariat to uncover the facts and take appropriate measures. An inter-ministerial task force headed by Vice Unification Minister Hong Yang-ho has also been formed.

Critics say there are serious flaws in the government’s readiness to protect its people, given that it was informed of the incident by Hyundai Asan at around 11:30 a.m., some six hours and 30 minutes after it occurred, and made an official announcement about the incident at 4:00 p.m., some 11 hours after the fact. Even after he was notified of the incident at 11:40 a.m., President Lee Myung-bak attended the opening of the newly-elected National Assembly at 2:00 p.m. and there delivered an address about new policies toward North Korea without mentioning the incident , giving rise to criticism that the government’s judgment of political affairs is seriously skewed.

In the speech, the president said his government’s North Korea policy prioritizes denuclearization while seeking “mutual benefit and co-prosperity.” “I am willing to have serious discussion with the North on how to implement inter-Korean agreements made so far, including the July 4, 1972 Joint Statement, the 1992 Basic Agreement, the 1991 Joint Declaration of the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the June 15, 2000 Joint Declaration and the October 4, 2007 Summit Declaration,” he said.

It was like inside north Korea, but a place controlled by one of our corporations, because the north hates us but likes our money. The entire place is fenced, making it into something like an island. Even during the time when the North sunk one of our warships and killed our sailors, they didn't stop the tours.

There are some hard-to-understand things here:

#1. She ran 4.5kms in just 30 minutes, which is something I can't even do, let alone a 53 year old woman.

#2. They told us hours after the incident.

But you've probably never been running for your life with people shooting at you and shouting over megaphones.

Adrenaline is good stuff - especially when you are not concerned about scrapes and bruises.

This incident is a disgrace.

That was her one last shot at tourism.

-or-

The main bullet point of this story is to always obey the guards.

I look forward to the day when Kim Il Jong dies and the North Korean government collapses under its own illogical existance, and the south can reunite with NK in a single democratic state.

Its an abomination and an affront that NK still exists as a separate state, it should have imploded under its own failings long ago.
