not angry bout nvidia, angry bout valve (and ati)

The problem is, the people over at nVidia are douche bags. They ignored the DX9 API and simply picked and chose what they wanted to include and modify. They then force developers to make special code paths with decreased quality to run their f'ed up "DX9" version.

Nobodies fault but their own.

You know what these forums need? Karma a'la Slashdot. That way people would be able to skip over the really misinformed statements.

The deal is this:

When Valve started working on the sequel, ATI wasn't exactly a contender. Even two years ago, ATI wasn't up there in the consumer market. It wasn't until 13 months ago with the Radeon 9700 (at which point the first beta build of Half Life was up and running, referenced from HardOCP's interview where the game they were running pre-E3 used code compiled in September 2002).

What's that really mean? It means that Half Life 2 was NOT built from the groundup with ATI. Nvidia and ATI were of course contacted either before, or shortly after the first major builds to ensure compatibility/support/etc, along with Microsoft's DX team. The fact of the matter is that ATI managed to not only implement it right, but implement it in such a way that follow up products would follow that same "core" doctrine of DX9.

So please, please. Lets chuck this ATI biased BS out the window. Get your facts straight and write letters to Nvidia.

If you're wondering, I'm not an ATI fanboi or whatever you would like to call me. To be perfectly honest, this is terrible news for all gamers in the long run. If Nvidia starts sliding like 3dfx did, then ATI isn't going to have the competition to encourage innovation that led to such marvels as the Radeon 9700 Pro. Hopefully the NV38 and the NV40 will pick up the pieces.

No surprise. So much for the reason why Valve doesnt want people to use the Rel50 drivers from NVidia. It was just foreseeable.

You will notice it best on the black/yellow industrial hatch pattern. Good job NVidia. Generally the scene is lighted slightly different, and the textures on the Rel50 are blurry.
