Could 26 November be the date we've been waiting for? Plus! Latest screens revealed
The ongoing saga of Half-Life 2's release date, and the relationship between publisher Vivendi and developer Valve, reads like something out of a soap opera. Even closer to fiction have been the many tentative and claimed 'insider reports' of an actual on-sale date that have proliferated the web on a regular basis since the game first slipped last autumn. Once again the rumour mill is buzzing with release date mania, with 26 November being strongly tipped - but this time there may actually be some substance to it.
The fact that both companies involved would obviously like to get the game out in time for Christmas and that the game has been available for pre-loading to Steam clients since 27 August are compelling reasons to be optimistic about an imminent release.
We spoke to Vivendi this morning who gave us this official statement: "Last week we received a Half-Life 2 release candidate from Valve and in its current state HL2 is brilliant and astonishing. Vivendi Universal Games is in the midst of determining whether HL2 meets the gameplay standards of the company and, more importantly, the devoted fanbase. This is standard for every game and it's particularly important for HL2 given its technical depth. We are hopeful that we can communicate a ship date very soon."
It's a standard company reply but, coupled with the recent significant move of the ongoing Steam pre-loading, it would be tempting to read it as Vivendi surreptitiously suggesting that the code is finalised and that they've nailed an imminent release date. While the net will continue to post specific release dates, don't believe a word until Vivendi's official announcement.
In related news, US online retailers appear to have let the cat out of the bag with regard to the contents of a Half-Life 2 special edition. EBGames.com lists the collectors' pack as containing a limited edition DVD of the game plus Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life: Source, a T-shirt and Prima book.
