Now Valve has an opportunity on their hands... imagine the source engine with thousands of 'contributors' throughout the world?

Now ID will have to follow suit and release the source for DOOM III under some kind of GPL...


Yeah.... i know it bites for the developers, but I'm sure they'll figure some positive spin to it.

Ummm... the code being leaked is not a good thing.
Whoever stole it likely had the intention of creating hax and cheats with it, or even accessing other people's PCs via steam.

Also it's not I.D. (eye dee) it's id or iD (idd). Like the term in Jungian psychology, that which reacts only by instinct to animal urges and needs.

Sorry to be annoyingly nit-picky, that's just always bugged me.

IIRC they've been called "id software" since roughly 1991-1992, by the time the Comamnder Keen and Wolfenstein series were introduced.

and I called it "eye-dee" as well.

PiMuRho, it may have been spelled/capitalized differently but I'm quite sure the meaning and pronunciation has always been the same. At least since the first Doom, when I took an interest in them.

Probably because in Quake 2, they put their name "id software" on some dog tags in the intro movie or something. And dog tags are actually I.D. tags, so I can see the confusion.


I still like saying I.D. software instead of "idd software" for some reason, also.

If any doom3 source code did find it's way onto the internet it would most likely be via a graphics card manufacturer (mentioning no names...). Id develope their code in Linux, and they dont use Outlook express which is notorious for being succeptable to viruses and trojans. I hope Valve have learned thier lessons (Gabe will be cursing his former boss right now).
