NPC in Route Kanal won't talk to me

I just downloaded my copy of HL2 using steam the other day.
I got to a rebel hiding in the sewers in the route kanal level (where he turns on a light and jumps down from a ledge). I walk up to him and hit the use key and nothing happens.
From what I've been told, he is supposed to open the locked door on the left.

Anyone else have this problem and know the solution?

load a recent save game or restart the chapter.

still doesn't work

I loaded a saved game and restarted the chapter and played thourgh to him again, same results: can't talk to him or open the locked door

Use noclip then.
sv_cheats 1 in console
noclip 1

Mzhang, if he/she does that then the next section of the level won't load

then just use the changelevel command.

try validating your HL2 files to see if anything has been corrupted.

this is a problem where the ai fails to work properly, all the people and bad guys just stand there. there are a few ways to fix it

first find the folder \half life 2\hl2\cfg.
inside create new text doc called ai_fix.cfg.
in this new doc write

ai_norebuildgraph "1"
ai_disable "0"

then make the file read only (right click then properties)
then in \half life 2\hl2\cfg find a file called valve
open it using notepad
under the line that says exec autoexec.cfg write
exec ai_fix.cfg.
save the change to the document and the ai will be restored and your good to go!

I'm not sure if the installation is different if you have a hardcopy of the game. I downloaded the game using steam and there is no folder
called "\half life 2\hl2\cfg".

I downloaded the game using steam after I verified it with my valid cd-key I got when I forked over $800.00 CND for my radeon 9800xt video card.
I registered my game with steam then downloaded it.
played thourgh until that part in route kanal

I belive you. Try use the changelevel command to the next level. And you don't have to write topics on every post.

I guess I'll have to skip the rest of the level then.
So I open the console and type what to swith to the next level?

skiping the level wont help, the ai will still be disabled in the next level. besides why should you lose out on this level? you paid for it. did you search for the cfg folder in your half life directory? its a fairly important one, i cant see how you would not have one.

use windows search and search your half life 2 installation for cfg

or try typing ai_disable 0 in the ingame dev console

ok so the folder is in /games/steam/steamapps/talanthar/halflife2/hl2/cfg
so that's why I couldn't find it
anyway I made that new doc and edited the valve one but still no luck, maybe I have to restart the level?

I dont think you can do anything unless you are a programmer.
Those kind of idiotic bugs shouldnt be there when you pay for the game.

contact valve. it's their problem if you have a faulty product.

oh yeah, Talanthar, did you get it to work??
Try to make some quicksaves, and stand in different spots/places every time, and then quickload.
Thats how I got mine to work, eventually.
