NPCs won't move or anything

I'm on the part right before meeting the girl near the airboat on the "route kanal" chapter. However, I'm unable to speak to her. Also, none of the enemies i encounter shortly before meeting the girl actually move and none of the headcrabs spawn. I haven't had any problems with the game until I loaded this particular autosave. Any help would be appreciated.

Validate your HL2 files through Steam. You do have and use Steam right?

Is it too soon to get started on why piracy fails?...

Try restarting the whole chapter by going to New Game and picking Route Kanal... (is that with a C or a K??)
