After receiving my monthly subscription of Computer Gaming World a few weeks ago, I instantly peeled back the cover to skim over some pre-E3 content inside the issue. About halfway through my adventure of frantic page-turning, I stumbled across an article titled "Nuclear Dawn: Make morning-after war". Impressed with what I had seen, I ran over to the Nuclear Dawn forums to congratulate the team on such an opportunity to have their Half-Life 2 modification previewed in one of the most popular PC gaming magazines in world. To my amazement, I saw a thread which revealed to me that the game was also previewed in the popular UK mag PC Zone.[br]

[br]You have to give the team credit. Their hard work is paying off and they are receiving well-deserved publicity. For more information and media on Nuclear Dawn, head on over to their official website. Oh, and both issues of said PCZ and CGW are on store shelves now!

Wasn't Robin Williams at E3 promoting Spore?

@ 6-3 ; yeh hehe.

magazine needs more offlimits tbh.

kool for nuclear dawn though :frog:

I fail to see how this is news. (We can't even see the article for one)
Many modifications get into these magazines. But good luck to them.

How did they get into it? They've shown the community basically nothing.

Concept art gets you in magazines.
Congrats to ND, nice work!

Ah. I'm guessing you missed the alpha screens on the screenshots page in our media section, then. :naughty:

Not to mention all of the stuff in the CGW article is in-game (no renders, no concept art).

I was a webdesigner for Megaman: Arena and we got into PC Zone. They sent US an e-mail asking if they could write a preview on it.

Can i just ask, why is it when news arises about this upcoming mod that there is sense of negativity in the posts?

I'm just not convinced by it. The map screenshots are wonderful, don't get me wrong, but end of the day it's about how it plays - anyone can make something in Hammer and make it look pretty.
We'll see.

The project lead for Nuclear Dawn is an obnoxious ego-centric nutcase that takes great effort in belittling everyone else in the Hl2 modding community.

It's a shame that everyone else's hard work on this mod has to be dragged down by DaveL's poor reputation.

Their mappers are not just good at making things look pretty; they actually know what they're doing when it comes to layout and design also.

I was considering posting this when I saw it on the ND forums (where I'm a regular also) but I didn't think it really warranted a post; either way, kudos to them.

And for christs sake guys, drop the DaveL thing. I know where you're coming from [I've heard stories, and I know DaveL, so I'm familiar with it all] but it'd be nice if you stopped being unfair to the team because you happen to dislike the leader.

DaveL is one of the best project leaders I've worked for. Why don't you guys like him?

Note: I don't hate him myself, PogoP.

Why haven't you guys posted anything else from other mods in mags? Cause those 2 pictures doesn't show us anything from the content, so it isn't really interesting. Could have atleast given us some more media while they are at it.

Don't pm me your email for the scans of CGW[/reverse psychology}

My experience with these magazines is that all they do is scan the public information available (i.e. the web site), grab the readily available screenshots, and throw together an article. I wonder if they even play the mod they're covering if it's available. I've had articles describe features that are planned for Empires but not implemented yet as already in the mod. Publicity is nice and all, but you'd think they would put a little effort into what they write.

I posted a (fully authorised!) online copy of the CGW article on MINERVA a while back - although that was more out of pride than jealous self-promotion.

Oh, and I got interviewed in another article too. Woo!

Bingo.
They're basically fluff pieces at this stage in gaming journalism.

I mean, BM(S) has gotten articles when they're all but purely hype, in what I've seen.
Similarly, Nuclear Dawn isn't exactly the least excessive self-promotion machine out there either.

It's not that their media isn't pretty.
It's just that their respective claims to fame really have very little to with the actual games they are intending to make.

BM's entire claim to fame is a cash-in on the Half-Life name.
ND is famous almost exclusively for their old concept art.

It's not exactly garrymod material we're talking about here.

gamestar was my favorit magazine back in Germany,I wish they could ship it over seas.

yeah I agree with some of you, I don't understand how this is news. alot of HL2 mods get into magazines, big deal, why the hell would that alone make a headline...

Is the online mod community really -that- lame right now? cmon guys.

I can't understand it myself, 1 picture shows the title "nuclear down" the other a cover of the magazine where they don't even mention ND, so what is there to see? The thing I can't understand even more, is that the new "steam update" even mention this...

Well they just released an update, that might be the reason.

We supply news to the newsdesks. The newsdesks decide if it's frontpage news or not. On this occasion they did. There's a big difference between the mention in PCZ (which is nice, don't get me wrong) and the 3 page interview exclusive in CGW. What it does show is that we know a solid and broad-ranging community is how you get the best out of your mod. As a multiplayer mod we will depend on getting user feedback from as many people as possible to perfect the gameplay and on future user-created content to keep the game fresh and exciting. So we will approach magazines to see if they'll feature us, in the same way we'll approach HL2 newsportals for news announcements, interviews and other exclusives. [Edit] But we didn't approach CGW. They approached us.

What a lot of you seem to have got wrong though is the assumption that we're hyping a mod which doesn't have anything to back it up. ND doesn't only have old concept art to show for itself - anyone who checks the website will see that on top of our concept art we have 29 other images, 8 of which were taken during Alpha games. Would we honestly get a mention in the weekly Steam news if we only had old concept art to show for ourselves? No. We got mentioned because we have demonstrated a working Alpha including the RTS structures and Commander view which are currently only available in the CGW magazine article (that presumably Valve have read).

I hope that clears up the confusion some people seem to be having.

Nice.

All MINERVA's appearances in the press have been the result of journalists approaching me, not the other way round.

Just completed an interview for PC Zone. Probably be out next month? Maybe... ;-)

Well if there is a 3 page exclusive, then we wanna see it, and not just hear about it.
It's "useless" news unless we actually get to see some, cause not everybody can buy, or even find CGW at their newsshop or whatever.

Oops :p

I kinda got this wrong. It was already done before I joined the team so I can't claim anything for it. Turns out they did approach us after all. My mistake! :upstare:

Okay, CGW have just gone up a lot in my estimation :) (and god I feel like a tit  )
