Nuclear Dawn

Guys, it is a countdown. It just isn't entirely reliable as upon refresh it always starts at the nearest min:30 secs.

Now, is it for the release of the mod or the site?

Less than 160 million?!
God, thats less people than in the Middle Ages!
And that is one sexy website. Nice soldier designs too. :)

Mysterious,ohh ahhh....
No ingame shoots=me no interested.

I am trying to figure out what the name of a mod I saw was. I really liked th player models....they kind of looked like the guys in the outside shot from this thread and these guys http://mods.moddb.com/gallery/image/28494/ http://mods.moddb.com/gallery/image/28495/ but were standing on disks like this guy http://mods.moddb.com/gallery/image/28170/ i could have sworn it was a thread on this forum but I looked at all of my posts and couldn't find one. Please help, i was really excited about that mod...whatever it was. I want to say it was "nuclear ....." but I looked at all the "Nuclear....." mods and none of them are it...neotokyo kinda has the same look as the game I'm thinking of. thanks for taking a shot at my very vague description

nevermind, found it after 2 hours of searching HL2.net and devianart.com. finally found it on google.com and found the artist site through google. www.retro-shinobi.com yesssssss!!!!!!!!!! i had made a wallpaper using two of those renders but lost it due to a failed hd

How could you possibly guess how good a mod will be from concept art that probably doesn't have much or any representation of gameplay?

I was just impressed by the concept art. I'd rather look at great concept art than play CS or DoD, but I'm an arty/animator sort of person who enjoys art blogs and such.

Wow, that is some cool concept art. Does anybody feel that they look like they came out of HL2?

Dunno if you bothered reading hunting bears post, but on this guys page, there are actual 3D models and you can view short clips of them in rotation.

>> Check it here <<

There is even a Nuclear Dawn showreel.
It shows the models from that page basically and they do looks pretty sweet.

The perceptive ones under you, will notice though, that this showreel dates from 2004

For those of you who are saying this concept art is old: yes, it is, but that just means they've been working on the game for over two years. That means it's probably going to be a very good game- unlike all the mods that post EVERY SNIPPET of information in a huge, hyped up media release... and then just fade away.
Funny you should say that, as this mod, for the past two years, hasn't even been able to get beyond even that.

I believe they've been doing very well, Im no authority on mods. But when you outsource and contact alot of developers about freelance gigs, they are more than happy to spill their exploits.

Unless they have been blowing smoke up my ass (which alot, if not all artists do... bloody chancers :p ).

The concept work is a great piece of inspiration. Whatever reservations the general modding community has about its leader and certain other members. Its still a great set of works, and the mod is apparently well under way.

Great work is still great work, be it in concept or finished product.

Nuclear dawn has never given anything away, and from what I can remember from talking with its lead they have no intention of releasing until its 100% complete.

With regards to other mods clasping for attention, well thats simple PR. Release and release fast. Look at counterstrike, a playable version was released, and quick successive updates until it was stable and balanced. Heck I still remember the silenced socom that could head shot from the other side of the map.

Anyway simple point there are two approaches that mods can take. Release a steady stream of content releases, or wait until its 100% finished. Given that mods are not complete games whcih are going to retail, I never understood the reasoning behind expecting to release a mod with AAA game title standards (its a mod). Its this expectation of sheer perfection that ensures most mods fail.

Anway all we can do is wait and see.

On optimism: it's a problem you face when about 75% of what you report on is stuff that isn't out yet but, when it is, might be really really great. Notice even in games magazines it's rare to find a non-optimistic preview piece.

I v done some research, the main 3D artist Steven Shmuely, is a 3D artist from south africa who worked for a game company and is now a 3d freelance artist.
Now I can see how that would piss me off if I was working for a mod and I can see other teams hiring Peter Molyneux for their mod when I get to work on my stuff after I finish my non game related daytime job.
is that what you meant Javert ?

its not a countdown to anything though it restarts when you refresh

I saw that too, but watch the minues instead of the seconds and you'll see that it actually does count down =)

nice concept art. No game. Stinks of too much PR to me, however promising the setting sounds. Anyone know what type of game this is? It'll have team shooter written all over it

Excellent I really thought this mod was dead, allthough I thought it strange that they kept their site up and running. But now it all makes sence, they were developing in covert, and pow here they are again.

Many of you might recognize this concept of being from Ukitakumuki, has has a deviant page http://ukitakumuki.deviantart.com

He hasnt however been working for this mode for a good year now, little more. He has however been working for some time now with the mod Project: Hull-Breach, http://www.hull-breach.com

Two very promosing mods to be sure.

good times.

thanks for the recognition

You guys suck at being internets detectives.
I've seen ALL of it about a year ago, that counts Shinobis models aswell.

If you browser any cg forums then you probably have seen even more than this.
Its impressive, but how does it play?

Cmon people, don't go start talking about things like "dah countdown isn't real! It's t3h bugged!!!"

It refreshes the seconds which I'm guessing is a bug in the plugin they're using (unles it's flash, then they royally efed up the setup) but the minutes / hours DO go down. The countdown is probably for a giant media release. Although I AM hoping for a game release ^_^

Wooaaah that countdown thing is damn cool.

so far this is the only HL2 mod thats got me jumpin off the wall, yet i know nothing about but the 3 pics >_< i don't know why but i'm watching that damn count down 24/7 :p

It looks good, but it is all how it comes together in the end. Amazing concepts, amazing models, but poor level design can make all the difference.

I really hope they hit those concepts and keep up with those models. If they can, it will stand to be one hell of a project.

story too. for me its got to be like a movie. and i play the lead part, the story is what keeps me playing any game so i hope its a good one :D

I just watched the show reel from www.retro-shinobi.com, the one with the models spinning around, and it is nothing short of outstanding. Stellar modelling and texture work. All I hope is that the rest of the mod is the same standard.

Of the few things I know about this mod, I know that they have been working hard and keeping silent while everyone else is doing media releases and hyping everything up for possible disappointment. But these guys must have a ton of content already, and I don't think anyone will be disappointed since we never had unrealistic expectations to begin with.

If they have a ton of content and so many industry pros, why can't they atleast show some new concepts?

oh, they have fine content and it's going to be a stellar mod. i'm hyped to shit right now.

only problem is, ChrisL's on the team, and there is no one on the modding scene that I loathe more than him. actually I'm not sure if he's still on the team, or if he was kicked off... but a bigger douchebag never existed.

Examples plz

The fact that I hired him to do PR work for Xenos and he tried to take the mod over and change the concept (from eerie alien type game to OMG CARTOON NINJAS). Luckily the rest of the team isn't retarded, everyone went "WTF" and now dislikes him.

There are a few threads here and there with more examples.

this thread's about ND, though, and I'm sure the majority of that team are not only stellar artists but also awesome people. He was just the one bad egg.

Apparently ND did indeed let ChrisL go some time ago, which is wonderful because that means I can love this mod with impunity. Fanboy time, I think?

Also, if brisck1 works on it, then I'm starting to get scared of how amazing this is going to be. ace team so far.

...uh, yay?

But YAY! for the mod itself. If the end result can come anywhere near its concepts, it'll sweep everything else off the board.

Idno, who is hyping more, those that show what work they've done every few months, or those that release 2 year old screenshots together with a countdown timer ? :) (nice way to do it though, it sure works judging by the reactions here)

Their team is very talented, no doubt about that. I have my reservations about their leader, but that is personal (although I'm not alone in this). I hope their gameplay is up to par with what (non-released) content I've seen so far, and they'll be a great mod regardless. Oh, and I really hope the countdown timer is for a public release, rather than media release hype buildup.
