Unofficial NV40 Specifications

Now all we need is more info on ATI's.
Oh, and benchmarks but that won't be for awhile. At least it will keep us guessing.

This is the important part.
The main issue of the currently available GeForce FX products – relatively low Pixel Shader performance – will be definitely addressed by the NV40, which has two times more efficient Pixel Shader pipelines.

Arbitrary tech jargon is worth as much as an ice cube is to an Eskimo. Performance is what is important, not numbers on paper. I wouldn't waste my time thinking about the NV40 or the R420 (leave that up to the people that get paid to design those cards... unless that includes you) until I see some decent benchmarks. For now, go play the FarCry demo or some other game.

If i were them i would dump the "FX' name.....
Yes, completely agree.
They changed the driver name (forceware) now the card name would be a good change too.

w00t!!! They are going to actually CHALLENGE the two year old R300!!!

Man i wanna see ATI's offerings now. What do you wanna bet that the new NV40 is going to be soo optimised for DX after all the shit they got this year over HL2?

Now that they are back in the group for DirectX and they have seen their poor design choices they are correcting them with this design.
I've heard this designed described as "More wide and shallow than narrow and deep" which is how the recent Radeon design has been (Thinking along the lines of Pipelines/textures per).

ATI will actually have PCI Express tech. in their first card (but an AGP card slot) while Nvidia's is a 8x AGP tech. still. Course they will bridge it to PCI Express later.

i don't like the idea of that last part of the sentence... im no expert but i have a feeling the "bridging" will somehow hinder the performance..

Well it probably won't just be a shoddy emulation, there will probably be a redesign of the chip to optimise for the PCI-X, because if anyone is gonna notice any kind of hit in performance it's high end graphics card users. I could barely tell the IQ differences on the Nvidea cards looking at them side by side, but someone took the time to really examin it and expose them. So it's doubtful they'll be doing anything haphazzardly for a while now that they're neck and neck with ATI.
