Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS

It probably is. Although you may have to turn the HIGH settings down a notch just because it's a mobile GPU and not top of the line.

I don't necessarily need to max settings out just run it somewhat decently with an O.K framerate.

Thanks, that answers my question perfectly. My other option for more money is go with the 8600M GT. I was debating spending the extra dough but if this will give similar results then I'll go with it.

Anandtech has a listing of all currently available mobile graphics cards and their theoretical outputs. You can combine that with Asus' link to extrapolate performance based on your card.

I'd go with the 9500M GS based upon the paranoia regarding the failure rates on the 8600M GT's. I personally spent a little bit extra money for a newly purchased laptop with a 9600M GT than saving money with a 8600M GT just for the piece of mind.

Nvidia have just put out their mobile 9800 series. The 9800M GT is essentially a rebranded 8800m GTX (which is about the best gfx card you could ask for in a laptop) - with the added bonus that it has dropped massively in price, so have a look and see if you can afford it.

Thanks a lot for all your input guys. I thought I'd follow up with my results. Thanks to your encouragement I ended up going with the 9500M GS. I have played to some degree all the half life games and all of episode 2. It plays great. On Lost Coast I did one of those "video stress tests" and I got just over 60FPS. I don't know if thats good or not but I'm sure happy with the unit.

For anyone googling this wonder the same as I was: my unit is a Acer Aspire AS6920. It has a Duo Core T5750 2.0GHZ with 3072MB RAM 320 GB harddrive 16" screen and the NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS. After my mail in rebate it was $850 CDN. So far for what I paid I'm VERY impressed.
