Nvidia SLI benchmark results...

thats pretty impressive. itll be interesting to see some benches in doom3, farcry, and source.

"The Opteron 250 GeForce 6800 GT SLI system scored an impressive 8,081 points in the recently released 3DMark05 benchmark. In comparison, a single GeForce 6800 GT scored 4,452 points on a slower 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor in a recent GameSpot 3DMark05 test"

Not worth it for that kind of money

Hell the top scoring systems in 3dmark05 are X800XT PE systems, oced and blowing Nvidia's SLI rig out of the water.

Ya and imagine what nvidia will be able to do with mature drivers, overclocked cards and a system that doesnt use registered memory. The drivers arent very mature yet and still have a lot of improving to do. And imagine if they were using 2 6800 ultra's instead of 2 6800 gt's. My bet is a lot of those x800 xt's are not stable to run games for 4-5 hours straight unlike the SLI configuration. But I could be wrong. The 6800 ultras are excellent overclockers with some people reaching 500 core with water cooling but the norm being 475.
The SLI drivers

It seems like a lot of people dissmissing the SLI technology as crap because its exspensive and that an x800 xt has passed it in 3dmark05. Not every x800 xt that comes out of the factory can reach a 700 core clock speed and my bet it only 1 in 100 are able to do that. Lets also remember that the cooling setup to get those x800 xt's at such high clock speeds would cost nearly the same as what the SLI configuration would cost. So if you have two 6800 ultra (which arent overclocked) against a heavily overclocked x800 xt for the exact same price I am going to bet that everyone would take the SLI. I could go on but I wont. This isnt flame bait just a fact based post. So dont take it offensively

2 6800ultras is $1000. a very small percentage would take that over one xt being $500.

Ya but im trying to compare a overclocked x800xt with liquid nitrogen cooling to 2 6800 ultras in SLI.

If anyting the x800 xt with liquid nitrogen is even more expensive.

Not really. Though you could go up 50-250 $ depending on how much you do yourself.

And of course, there is the insane amount of wattage... Any numbers? :p You'll also need a dual PCI-E mobo, and those are pretty hard to find.

Though its nice to see that nvidias sli system works, and that the performance gain is 2x, not anything lower :)

Isn't ATI coming out with an SLI system for the x800 pci-e's? Or are they waiting for the R5XX series to do anything like that? Or are they even doing it at all?

You won't be able to overclock SLIed nvidia cards, have you seen how close together they are?

all you will be able to use is stock cooling, so your ocing won't go far.

You might be right about the price because Im having a hard time find pricing on this stuff, but I have heard its much more expsensive then watercooling. But you have to get all those parts custom fabricated and that will cost a bit extra money unless you know how to do it yourself. You would have to buy a dewer for the liquid nitrogen which seems like its expensive if you go to this site.

The cheapest is $72 and it only hold 100ml of LN for a maximum of 7 hours. (The liquid nitrogen will just boil off after 7 hours)
The most exspensive is $440 and it hold five liters of LN for a period of 12 days.

Lets not forget that you are going to have to be constantly be refilling you liquid nitrogen as the old stuff boils off.

And custom fabricating your parts might be easy for some while hard for others. In which case they will have to get a company like danger den to do it for you.

The biggest problem I can see with these LN setups its its just not practical for playing games. No one will want to be playing games while sitting beside a CPU and GPU that is running at -192'c. Your room temperature will drop and it just wont be confortable to be in for 4 hours a day. And I dont know how often you have to refil the LN but I would presume that its every couple hours, then you run out and have to go buy more. Its just not practical. One of the point im trying to make is the cooling setups you see on the X800 XT's is just for breaking bencmark records, its not for playing games 100% stable and its not for convienence.

Of coarse all this doesnt matter now because I just realized that they are using cascade coolers. on there systems.
Look.

Not true you can easily fit a waterblock between them if you choose to.
Link
This is probably one of the best blocks out there for the 6800 series cards and it will easilly fit between the two cards because its tubes come out of the side instead of the top.

:) If that is like true, they probably hold the highest score... who cares though... you could get like about 8000, on a SINGLE x800 XT PE, pending on system specs. Give the cookie to Nvidia if they scored like 20,000 with SLI'd Geforce 6800 Ultra's.

Man do I dont want to explain this all so why dont you look up cascade coolers on google.

N2 cooled and phase change cooled X800XT PE's you mean....that you couldn't carry to a lan party cause the setup was so big...
