In my opinion the most likely culprit, or at least the most likely sponsor of the culprits in the theft of the HL2 code are NVIDIA!
They are under massive pressure because of their terrible DX9 support. Their fastest cards (5900 Ultra etc) can only really achieve about half the performance of the ATI 9800 Radeon cards in HL2. See http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030912/index.html for details.
The fact that VUE now say that HL2 will be delayed until April 2004 () as a result of the code theft, means that NVIDIA now have much more time to catch up with ATI. They *may* have bought themselves some breathing space!
