Ok, the problem i'm facing today is hooking up my Media PC to my HDTV. I'm tying to connect it HDMI to HDMI though my 8600GT. I get a picture but i don't get any sound. I've looked though the Nvidia settings but can't make heads or tails of it, all of it seems relating to graphical setting only and the audio settings in Windows doesn't show anything for HDMI.
I hooked up my gaming PC with my HD4850 with a DVI to HDMI converter and i got sound straight away.

I've only ever used ATI's so i haven't a clue on how to get this to work. I was hoping that since the 8600GT had a native HDMI port unlike my 4850 it would get sound automatically.
So does anyone have any advice on what i can do?

Hey, I have a laptop and a 9800m GT so my situation is potentially very different, but I have to jump through a small hoop or two to get sound working over HDMI so maybe it will be a similar process to the one you need.

In order to switch my sound over, I have to go to Control Panel > Sound, select 'Digital Output Device (SPDIF)' and set it to default. All sound then comes out of my HDTV no probs. That's on Vista btw.

If you can't see any other Sound options in the list, try right clicking in the blank space and see if anything like 'Hide Disabled' is checked. Perhaps your HD source has been disabled at some point and become hidden from your list of defaults. That's all I can think of.

Alright thanks for that. I'm gonna try it out tomorrow since i'm not at home. It shouldn't matter that have XP on it, right?

I didn't know video cards were sound processors as well. Wow!

I never done this, so forgive me if don't know what it is that I'm talking about, but shouldn't your sound source be from your sound card?

Good Luck Pimpin.

HDMI is used as a transport for video, sound and remote control information. I'm guessing that the video cards that support HDMI don't actually do any sound processing themselves, but just act as a transmitter.

I've looked in my sound options in control panel and i can't find 'Digital Output Device (SPDIF). All i have is 'C-media rear panel'

The HD4850 has it's own on board sound processor so it can process sound for HDMI. I was quite surprised at the quality as well. Not quite as good as my X-FI but still loads better than on-board sound.

I had a google around for you and you might be out of luck, depending...

This link is fairly informative. Essentially, the 8600GT has no audio controller so the sound has to come from somewhere else. Some 8600GT's have an SPDIF-in socket, through which you can route the sound if you have an SPDIT-out on the motherboard and link them up with the right cable ('cinch' cable..??).

Some people in this thread discuss the same problem, and mention the card in the above link as a solution. Is yours a Gainward, perchance...?

If not, I guess you would have to get the sound via the output from your sound jack/card, running it analogue to the TV or an amp. Some people seem to be reporting that it is fiddly to get this working in Vista though (due to having to output digital and analogue at once).
