i hope, this hasn't been posted already!
i just found a link to a refreshingly objective comparison of doom3 and hl2.

http://www.avault.com/articles/getarticle.asp?name=titans&page=1

you really should check it out, cause it's really anbiased and great to read. finally someone who is talking about the facts. not some fan kid of either the one or the other game trying to bash the competitor.

nicely written, shows both sides of the argument. the ultimate fence-sitters article...reaffirming what most of us already know: both games are decent.

Even with such a greatly written article, that is very impartial, I have a feeling someone will dispute this article saying that he's a DooM3 fanboy. :dozey:

Doom 3's 1-dimensional gameplay frustrated me. I feel those maps would have worked much better as a 3rd person adventure game like resident evil or something. Having those maps in an fps game is just too restrictive and dull.

I also thought the story was ****ing shit, the sounds were extremely bad, there weren't enough good scripted cinematic monster sequences, the ending was woeful, the physics were hopeless and shit, ragdolls were laughable and Dr Betruger is bald.

I don't like Doom 3.

I don't see how you can be impartial. You have to like one more than the other, everyone does whether they admit it or not. It doesn't matter which one you like more, but at least have an opinion. He compared the two but he never took a definitive stance. It's easy to say "this has this while that has this" without taking a stance on either of them. Everyone knows what both games offer, and everyone has an opinion. That entire article never culminated to a definitive stance. In a good comparision article, you expect the author to reach some kind of conclusion.

I for one like HL2 better. If someone liked D3 better that's fine but whats the point of beating around the bush.

What do you mean by 1-dimensional? ...You mean, there is only one way to run?. If so, i can't say i noticed more than 1 way to go in HL2 either.

HL2's story is just as badly made up as Doom3's. Somehow...somewhere, sometime, someone said HL had a story, and a good one at that and the funny thing is...it stuck and to this day people still can't see past the lame story, yet will whine about Doom3's lame story and even FarCry's lame story. Anyway...HL2 is no god when it comes to telling a story.

I quit reading after I saw him whining about installation.
He failed to mention the fact that either he had to run out to a store to get Doom III (and spent a good deal on gas :P), or waited for it to get shipped to him.
I was up and running with HL2 at 3:30 AM November 16th.

I think most people hate steam because it's the cool thing to do.
