Oblivion - crashed and now all saves corrupted?

I was playing oblivion and running along a path, suddenly the game crashed to desktop for no apparent reason. When I loaded the last save, my character was invisible, all my weapons and spells were gone, stats, quests, everything. Then I tried loading a previous save and the same thing!! My character was glitched to hell there too! I loaded one of my earliest saves, and all my equipment was back but the char was still invisible. (wtf?)

I tried looking for backups of the saves, but there was only one backup of "autosave" renamed it and everything, but it didn't work either, same problem. Is my character gone for good? This happened to me earlier today but I was able to fix it by using one of the backup saves. Oblivion has been crashing nonstop all day, I just reinstalled it and shivering isles expansion and the patch and everything seemed to be working, I just loaded the save kept from the previous installation, and everything was fine until the crash. Now all my saves are corrupt, am I screwed?

Did you try reinstalling again? Maybe some game file got corrupt.

Thanks, I had to start a new game because I assumed the save file was corrupt. So it's all new saves. But the game still freezes randomly during area transitions (it only happens from indoor to outdoor transitions) my computer and I have to a hard reboot to fix it. I've reinstalled the game and expansion + patch about 3 times but this still happens, so I have a feeling it's a problem with the game itself as this never happens in any other game I have. I've done a hard reboot like 6 times in the past 2 days, I can't keep doing this. Can anyone help me fix this severe game bug? Like I said it only happens during indoor to outdoor area transitions, and freezes the entire computer, the only way to fix it is a hard reset. This never used to happen before (I only reinstalled oblivion recently) like when the game first came out so I suspect the 1.2.0416 patch has something to do with it. I've installed the latest nvidia drivers, reinstalled the game several times, and even started a completely new character with all new saves, at this point I really have no idea what to do to fix it, so any help is appreciated.

Btw, thanks for the save manager, I've had the freeze lockup happen twice but I haven't lost any saves thanks to the program. Everyone should definitely get that program if they have Oblivion.

edit- Due to googling I've discovered that this is a well known bug in oblivion called the "Black screen of death" and is in fact caused by the new patch. I'm currently trying fixes and I'll update this post if/when its fixed.

The brilliant thing about each character being saved in another folder, is it allows all your characters to have their own autosave.

You better be joking. It's always so hard to detect sarcasm over the internet.

I fixed it. It was the patches' fault. The patch changed "iShadowMapResolution" from 1024 to something like 256. You have to change it back to 1024 (in the Oblivion.ini file). I haven't had the problem once. Just a random crash once in several hours but had nothing to do with the original problem.

Oblivion is a very unstable game, especially if you mod it. I suggest using the Unofficial Oblivion Patch to fix a huge amount of bugs - it's literally in the thousands as of the last several versions.

Yeah, no kidding. Shivering Isles made things much worse before they got better.

Do you think the unofficial patch would help me with the Nights of the Nine mod? I need to talk to the lady at the shrine for the quest to get the boots, but the only talk option i have is "rumors."
