well, i have an athlon xp 2600+ 333bus, and im wondering what i need if i wanted to overclock it to 400bus, currently i just have a volcano 11 cpu fan, rated at up to amd 3200+ cpus..
would i need water cooling? etc.. currently the processor runs at 98F, at 1/3 the fan speed of its max speed.

There's no set headroom for specific kinds of processors, but you can always turn the fan speed up and start exploring your processor's limits. If you can't reach 400 on air alone, you might want to try watercooling, but it's expensive and somewhat confusing.

you can do it on air.
the volcano 11 is ok but you might want to mod it to make it cool better:

take off the fan grill (takes off 3-4 degrees and reduces sound)
lap the bottom (the volcano 11 bottom is terrible) this involves wetordry sandpapering the bottom of it, with 600 grit, and up to 1000 if you want a mirror finish. (search lapping guide on google)
add Arctic silver 3 or cremitquie (dunno how to spell that)

or you can but another fan, for 20 bucks a Vantec aeroflow will do the trick.

make sure you got good airflow (front intakes, and back exhaust)

you dont need water and you should be fine.

oooo lala, thx
yay /me begins to remove that stupid gril
i might not OC yet, ill see after i get HL2.... if fps stays at 30, and rarely drops below, i wont, if it drops below a bunch, it will get the OC!!

stupid not able to edit.. sry for double posting..
- where is a good place to buy the artic silver 3 or the other stuff, whatever is best, is what i would like..

Im suprised noone mentioned this before..
What exactly do you want to do? Overclock so you get 12.5x200 (2500 mhz) or just up the FSB to 200?
If you just want to up it to 200, you should try 10.5x200, which would result in the CPU running at 2100mhz which is roughly what its built to run.
Only upping the FSB (and lowering the multiplier so that the total MHZ stays the same) will not affect the temperature on the CPU, only the northbridge, southbridge and RAM. So basicly, if you got pc3200 RAM and a motherboard that is built to take 200 FSB, you should have no problems at all.

arctic silver is like 6 bucks. any online store would have it, and most computer shops have it. just get the best shipping deal.

for the sandpaper you need to go to an auto store and look for 3m wetordry 600grit +
walmart has this, but only up to 600 grit. you can get an assorted pack there from 300grit to 600grit, then you need a 100 grit from the auto store.vantec aeroflow, easy to find online, and most shops carry them.

okay, i gained like 2 degress F from removing my gril, plus i could turn up the fan speed a little bit more.. sounds good :D, that FSB thing,, hmmm, are u posistive?? the keeping mhz speed down, but fsb up?, cause i was planning to put fsb and mhz up anyways.

--- omg, nothing like openning ur window for a little cool air, and getting a temp drop to 32C/89F :D

Washuu, absolutely sure.
Im running 168 FSB instead of 133 and I still only overclocked 100 mhz (still thanks to extra memory bandwidth I get a pretty good performance boost).
Even if you want to OC too, not just up the FSB, I'd lower the multiplier, I think 2500 might be alittle too high. I'd try to get it to 2300 MHZ, if you succeed, run ALOT of tests to check its 110% stable, then O/C like 10-20 mhz at the time, trying to get to 2500.
Even the step from 2100 to 2300, I would O/C like 50 mhz max at the time.

Oh and, Nothing like opening the window and stop sweating like a pig :cheese:
