Admins can delete this post if you want to, although there arent any spoilers and its not related to the HL2 beta. Just results from a vote.

I was browsing through all the HL2 sites i could find yesterday and came across this vote(no link because page is related to beta or something, dident read anything more)

What version of HL2 you will purchase?

1:License
52.0% (154 in total)

2:pirated
43.6% (129 in total)

3:not getting it
4.4% (13 in total)

votes in total: 299

129 persons arent many..but comon...who would get a pirated version of such a good game.

Im sure Valves security from this will be very good.

sooo..... :sniper: the pirates

EDIT: 2 is pirated, not :pirated

i think with steam it will be harder (not impossible) to pirate HL²

anyway i dont care, im getting it free ASAIO

im kinda worried about if they can stop people finding a way to download it through steam without there own cd key and watnot, im sure sum jackass will find a way and then once he knows...so does everyone els

Heh...secu-rom will take care of pirated copies.

Isn't that the thing that blows up your CD drive so it impales your leg that I think it was Dougy came up with?

bleeding to death savagery...lush.

Pirating is dull, i like people making me good games so i shall pay them for their work, i just don't get every game on the market.

I really hope Valve don't use some cd protection lock thingy, they normally f*** up the game for legit customers ****COUGH****TRACKMANIA****COUGH****

Was this site HL2 World by any chance?

Yeah, SecuRom will take care of the pirated copies as well as the legit copies.

Steam however the way it is designed makes it more challenging to pirate Half-Life 2. I don't think they would be able to download the content, which is the good part, if they did get it though they can simple change stuff here and there to operate w/o needing steam to verify stuff. Also if you are worried about someone finding out and stealing your CD Key that would be the last thing to worry about if you bought it via Steam. One thing to be worried about since the stolen leak is a hacker getting into the customer databases containing all the CC's, personal info, and what not that is linked with Steam.

I pirate any game i like that does not have MP that appeals to me.

For example

Max Payne 2 etc.....

Why should i spend my money when i can get it for free.

yes thats a shitty attitude but i wouldnt buy the games anyway that dont have good MP.

Hell just this week Ground control 2 whent from my "going to pirate" list to my "going to buy" list becuase i love the MP Demo.

Its my way of rewarding companies for including MP and punishing lazy companies for not including it, or making a crap job of it.

Just because a game doesn't include a multiplayer part of the game means you should pirate it. If I use reverse your logic, I should pirate games Battlefield Vietnam because it has a horrible single player game.

You need to evaluate the game as a whole. Don't like part of the game, don't buy it. There is no reason to pirate games. Can't afford to buy all the games you want? Too bad, thats life. Don't give excuses for pirating, thats worse than pirating the game itself.

[laughs]
secu-rom is usually more of a hassle to paying customers then pirates. It's typically hacked out fairly quickly. Meanwhile, it prevents the game from working in many CD-R and DVD burners as well as causing slowdowns and crashes.

If single player is all people want, they'll get it without much trouble.
However, steam should do a good job of keeping pirates off MP.

yes, you should reward the companies for making MP and harm them for their efforts in single play...that's a sensible way to act....yes

Deviant never had difficulty in cracking every kind of new "anti-piracy" tech that come up.

I don't expect HL2 to be an exception, but I will buy it original, as I always do when I think that it deserves my money.

i.e. Max Payne 2 deversed my money

Yeah, good on you!

I do that all the time. While we're on the subject, I also kill people I don't like! I'm not really a fan of dogs, I prefer cats, so I take the opportunity to kick them in the teeth whenever I see a dog.

*End of sarcasm*

Dougy. You're a f*cking thieving moron. Just because you don't like something doesn't give you the right to steal it. There's no difference between downloading the game and just picking it up in a store and walking out without paying. You think game developers are the only ones that get money from games being sold?

I wouldn't worry, after all, we have the biozeminades on our side!

as pirated versions almost always come out like a week, sometimes 2 weeks, before the game is released, i'll download it and play it, then buy it when it comes out. i did the same with UT2k4 and farcry.

If you like something enough to install it and play it, you should pay for it. Granted I am first to admit, I had a large supply of pirated copies of games back in the day (in fact I still have some of them) but as games have gotten better and better, I am more willing to purchase it. The fact I am 30 years old now and have a successful career does'nt hurt either

Someone will probably cook up a steam password exploit so people can steal the game at 300kb/s...considering how fragile the system has been up to this point, it'll probably happen.

Yeah, I'm expecting people to get Half-Life 2 for free using a Keygen. There are plenty about.

Hmm, I guess I never notised, but your a real ASS!

I am a lot of people will attempt to get the pirated version of Half-life 2, either because they are cheap bastards or they don't think half-life 2 will be any good. And a lot of people don't think half-life 2 will be any good.

You do know that keygens work about 00.000000001% of the time when trying it on multiplayer? Keygens are meant to just make a key that fits the requirements, when trying to go online it checks the key to its verified list of legit keys. Since steam has everything online and has all of it checked, very very hard to get a legit key.

A game like Max payne can't have multiplayer, just imagine how we all would play if everyone just keeps bullet timing.

Lazy? just because Remedy thought it would be absurd to add MP in a heavy story driven SP is lazy for you? Try making a game like max payne then talk bro.

You are buying Half-Life 2 though, right?

You could fear that someone found a way of unlocking the preloaded hl2 from steam, but nobody where able to do that with condition zero...

But ones the games comes out, and people not interessted in multiplayer, there are no doubt that you can crack it.

That is the beauty of steam, if you are together on a local area network, you can only play the games if your key is verdified, right? And believe me, it is hard as hell to find a unused cd key to half life..*

*am not pirating anything, but when i bougth my copy of half life, som jackass had taken my cd key, and when the valve guys didn't respond to my mails, i tryed a keygen, but but but.... finally they listent to my cry's, and after some pictures of my recit and the game it self, i got a working cd key, so again, i am not a pirate!!! :) (sorry for det sp)

Hey you're from Wilts, me too, small world.

I pirate a game if I dont think it's worth the absurb $100 I have to spend buying it. I will buy HL2 and Doom 3, but I have a massive collection of pirated games and I make no excuses about it. If the devs make an overpriced game that isnt worth the cash, too f*cking bad for them.

If you think it's overpriced and not worth it you shouldn't be playing it, simple as that. Stealing is stealing.

iamaelephant said:
Yeah I know I shouldnt be playing it. But I do.

Is it not a little hypocritical that you would go to the trouble of downloading and playing a game that's "not worth buying"? Does it not invalidate your somewhat feeble argument leaving you with no justification?

wildhound its broadband which makes this easier, there are some class free games out there though if u want to play a free game.
Thats what its about, getting something for nothing, in Brittain at least i feel the games are hugely overpriced because the ps2 prices were so high and people still bought them, pc games did the same. Which is why you get people downloading pirated mp3's, the cd's are far too expensive.

How many games nowadays cost $100??

Anyways you are forgetting the fact that the money you paid for the game doesn't all go to the developer. It also goes to the publisher to pay all the people that work there, as well as where ever it was purchased from to keep the workers there paid. Even if it costs like $5 to make the game doesn't mean that they can sell it at that price and not go bankrupt.

Meh, i get it free for buying my ati card months ago..

There is always pirates.. you can reduce them but you cant exterminate them.

Steam will reduce the piracy big time..

Pirating the game makes it more of a hassle to play multiplayer (if not impossible), and keep the game up to date. I will admit that I do it, but only because I can't rent PC games and I'm not one to just throw away $50 on a game that turns out to be less than excellent.

I will be buying HL2 though, since I'm going to be modding it.

BTW, nothing will ever stop pirates from pirating software. New protection schemes only serve to give the hackers something to do. It's like a game for them. Company makes new protection scheme. Hacker breaks new protection scheme. The war will go on forever until companies realize it's just a waste of money.

Pretty much all of them in New Zealand.

I work nearly 10 hours to pay for a game and I'll be damned if I'm doing that for some peice of crap game thats been rushed out the door. If I pirate a game and it turns out to be really good I will usually buy it.

And for your information I dont download games I have better ways of pirating them.
