PONTIAC, Mich. — A woman who pleaded guilty to having sex with the biological son she gave up for adoption and later tracked down on the Internet has been sentenced nine years to 30 years in prison.

Aimee L. Sword, 36, of Waterford Township apologized at her sentencing Monday in Oakland County Circuit Court. She had pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in a deal with prosecutors.

Police say Sword used Facebook in 2008 to find her son, who's now 16. She gave him up for adoption when he was only a few days old, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"When she saw this boy, something just touched off in her — and it wasn't a mother-son relationship, it was a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship," the newspaper quoted attorney Mitchell Ribitwer as saying. "Aimee's searching for a reason why this happened. She can't understand it. She's going to get some counseling."

The boy testified they had sex in Waterford Township and Grand Rapids when he was aged 14.

Ignoring the whole incest/stalker thing, 30 years sounds like a really harsh punishment. I'd have to agree with Ryan. Unless there was actual physical violence or threats, 10 years even seems a bit much when she really just needs lots of therapy.
 
I think you're focusing more on the "son" aspect and not the "14 year old."

Try reversing the story, too. 36 year old man has sex with his 14 year old, adopted, daughter.

If I was 14 and banged some chick, I wouldn't want her in jail for 10 to 30 years for it. She needs therapy, not a third of her lifetime in jail.

Well, it's disgusting, but then there are also couples that like to poop in each other's faces. Being disgusting stopped being illegal some time ago. Actually, I don't think it ever was illegal.

The article doesn't mention whether or not she let the boy know she was his mom, if not, it's slightly worse, but still not anywhere near the vicinity of homicide.

And put aside your gut-reaction for a second and think about this rationally: why does it matter she is biologically his mom, given the fact that he in no way had a mother-son relationship with her at any point in his life? As far as I'm concerned, your mom is the woman who raised you, not the woman you share a good portion of your DNA with. I'd say the mother-aspect of this case is entirely irrelevant, leaving only a hot MILF banging a slightly underage horny guy. Oh noes, the huge manatees! I'm so outraged!

Again, ignoring the incest bit, yes. The guy needs therapy. Not a 1/3 of his life in jail.

My opinion may also be influenced by my opinion on putting people in jail in general. I think jail is a stupid, stupid idea that doesn't solve any problems. Therapy and giving (or forcing) a normal life for the person would work a hell of a lot better than locking them up inside one building for decades with other criminals and then letting them back out going "oh, they probably learned their lesson by now."

I do agree that 10 years is harsh. But calling it "basically nothing"? Did the kid even know she was his mother?

This isn't basically nothing. If some 36 year old male pervert banged a 14 year old girl nobody would call it nothing. And if that 14 year old girl was his daughter people would be calling for his head.

Well, that's just emotions speaking as men are intimidating, ugly, hairy things and women are vulnerable, pretty and innocent. If I could block out that sentiment, then yeah, I'd probably say the same thing. It's perception more than anything, plus perhaps some difference in mental development between boys and girls, but if anything it's that girls are mature sooner than guys. On a scale of a parking violation to the Holocaust, this case would probably rank as a 2 for me. I really can't bring myself to care about this, other than the fact that the life of an otherwise seemingly well-adjusted woman is being ruined over it.

For point A, it seems incest is only bad if it produces a baby. Use contraception, and the issue disappears completely. For point B, you are using a tautology. The reasons it's "gross" are because it produces genetically damaged offspring, and because of our cultural predispositions... which were only created as a reaction to genetically damaged offspring resulting from incest.
