Ok... just trawled through this thread... removed all the links to the illegal material... in future guys... please at least ask me or Farrowlesparrow first :)

cool, is that the big guy with a gaint machine gun on his sholder?

quake 4, its going to have a story line right? not like that quake 3...

*geos and plays quake 3*

hmm, the music in the flash is actually three music files, and they just play at specific intervals, weee.

Heh all the talk of polycounts was funny shit. You increase polycounts to provide a greater level of tweakability. Modelling figures with over 1 million polys even for the high end stuff would be a waste of development time, because the depth of tweakability you would have is microscopic in scale, and frankly would be more cumbersome to deal with than anything else.

You dont model high poly models the same way you do low poly models, playing with every individual poly gettin git just right.

Those quake4 shots were over 1 million poly, thats how high res they model the models to generate normal maps. It has been stated man ytimes by the developers that the models they use to egenrate the normal maps are between 1 and 2 million polies. Believe it or dont, whatever. But anyone with modeling experience would be able to tell just by looking at those models that they are over 1 million at least. They are just that detailed.

just for heads up...in the world of game development the word "soon" is very relative...even when it comes to websites.

example: www.thief3.com it's been displaying that message for half a year now.

It's in vogue to do that with sites these days, leave them with holding pages for years, I think the idea was thought up by a web designer who didn't like doing any work. Backlash is nobody needs web designers just for a holding page now so their all losing their jobs, note the lack of sympathy, web designers went to great lengths to tell proper artists we'd never work again and that they would be in demand from now on with their Flash sites... yeah that lasted long

EvilEwok is telling the truth (did I just say that? :)). When it comes to high poly work, millions of polygons are perfectly normal these days, especially with things such as subdivision surfaces. and if you converted a displaced, detailed NURBS surface to actual polygons, very very quickly reach a million or so with the amount of detail thats common these days.

Course doesn't mean _everything_ must be done at that level, but as he says, to get the normal map detail and other things, the higher the better. It's likely the maps generated from them will be huge, sampled down a lot to run on today's machines, but always there if they need them in the future. In seven years time, its plausable id could re-release QuakeIV with the higher quality stuff for the machines that are around then. People will probably still buy it again, and its no real extra work for id to do, money for nothing basically. If they ever thought of doing an animated show/film based on it, bam, the models are already there at a level of detail that can cover whatever they'll need them for.

Besides, actually drawing normal maps manualy is next to impossible to get right and would litterally require them to be done a pixel at a time, shade of color by shade of color. Just much easier to model it at high detail, use NURBS or displacement, anything to get the detail there in the geometry for the best kind of accuracy, its also fun to do models at that level and worry about the low poly versions another day ;)

It was rather funny.

I was watching TV waiting for the page to load becuase I thought it would take a while.

I hear the music and look at the page.

I feel out of my chair, hit my chin of the desk, bashed my shin against the corner of a leg of the desk, hit the back of my head on the hard plastic legs of the office chair I sit in, and my coccyx (end of tail bone) kissed the hard plastic mat under the office chair.

Now I am rather brused up at the moment and pains me to sit down.

Other than that, the music is probably the most tame thing I have ever heard. Add in some distant human screams and then it would be scary.
