How about this for a bit of irony :)

The editor for OPM (Official Playstation Magazine) wrote in her blog that she will not get a PS3 this November, and won't until the price drops... What will she get instead you ask? An Xbox360! :) "Turning to the dark side" as she says.

So it seems that Sony will be having an extremely rough year, especially with their own OPM not buying their own console...

well I'm not sure what sony was smoking when they decided to put a $600 price tag on a video game system. so I kinda agree. pretty pathetic that even the biggest sony fanboys aren't buying a ps3

Sony say thats it's a bargain (only because it costs them over $700 for each console)

their own OPM
It is not Sony's magazine, unlike Nintendo Power is to Nintendo. OPM just made a deal with Sony to get official status and the demo discs. Its a ZD magazine, and is part of their gaming group that does EGM, CGW, XBN, and 1up.com.

*sigh* I remember when Ziff Davis started taking over magazines...

They can go to hell.

this is what I think of PS3:

But I never thought finding things that rhyme with 360 could be so fun.

Political detainee60, family tree60, doctor's degree60,east indian fig tree60, capital of tennessee60, sri lanka rupee60, imperial decree60, I'm in hospital because I hurt my knee60..

I could go on, but I won't.

Well if you tag yourself as the "Official" playstation magazine, that brings with it some sort of expectations of the people working there, as in actually buying the console you will be writing about. If it was run by Sony, then the editors would at least get discounts from the employee store (which god knows how much you would actually save however)

It's just sort of a slap in the face for Sony once again...

Dont care. Ill be getting one on launch.

I don't really know about you guys, but If my job was to play ps2/3 all damn day, and write about it. I may want to do something different after work.. I probably wouldn't buy one either. And what would be the point to buy one when they are most expensive, when you would get to play it free all damn day anyway?

You would think though that the editor of their own "Official" magazine would at least get the console though. It's sort of expected with the territory. I mean, it's sort of like if you ran HalfLife2.net, but then never play Half-Life... It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Also, she doesn't play the games all day, but rather just edits the magazine (though she probably does write articles occassionaly), which means that she doesn't get as much playtime with the console as much as others. And if the console is only fun for a few hours a day, and isn't worth getting one for yourself at home, what does that say about it's entertainment value?

*Edit* Obviously, I'm just sort of thinking into it way too much (where price is essentially the determining factor), but I'm just giving some examples.

My thoughts exactly. How is one supposed to take them at all seriously if one of their editors, who will presumably be writing about it, isn't even getting one?! Perhaps that means she will just use the one in the office (if there is one). Weird and dumb professional admission. Blogs can be so harmful to the ignorant....

The $500 price point is a bit steep, but not as bad as people make it out to be. Sony will sell out its first shipment regardless of price, hopefully soon after we'll see a price cut. Just to get a wi-fi adapter for the 360 brings the cost to almost that, and the Blu-Ray player will definitely be worth a lot if the format takes off, and if not it'll still have a lot of game related advantages. Also, the online service is free, which also knocks a chunk off the long-term price.

Sony has messed up their marketing strategy quite a bit, but I still think they're offering the best console of the next generation. I say this mainly because the developers that make games exclusively for PS3 make up the majority of my favorite developers period, but also because I think the console is pretty appealing too. Wii looks good as well, but I'll have to get my hands on it first. As for the 360 ... I've played it plenty but I just don't see any standout exclusives that warrant buying the console.

But I won't be buying a PS3 at launch either. Mainly because I'm going to wait for either the price to come down or MGS4 to release, whichever happens first. Also because there's usually problems with the launch editions of consoles, as with the 360 and PS2.

Heh, yes ps3 seems like a bit of a joke console to me. It's really expensive and the other consoles seem a lot better. It doesn't even have GTA4 anymore...

The only reason i'd buy a ps3 is for the next final fantasy + MGS4.

600$ if you want it to be HD with the 80GIG hd. It pointless and your wasting your money if you get the 500$ version because you cant upgrade it. It comes with all the necessary ports for High Definition etc. No one can say the PS3 is to much. I mean your getting a blu-ray player that a lone is 1000 retail.

But is a blue-ray player worth $600 when they are just DVDs with some better resolution?

Well, if I was already planning to buy a Blu-Ray player before the PS3, then that would be a good deal. However, that scenario seems very niche, for lack of better words.

The PS3 is like the PSP to me, in that I want one, but the fact they added all this MP3/Video/SD card driver only made it worse for me cause I just want to play the games, and not pay $60 more for something I wouldn't buy even by itself.

I think Sony should've left Blu-Ray as an adaptable accessory, like the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. That way I could buy the PS3 cheap for the games, and if I really wanted a Blu-Ray player, I could add it later.

Except I don't even want a Blue-Ray player. 600$ is too much because Blue-Ray itself is too much.

Using the PS3 as the trojan horse for the new medium was probably one of the worst decisions they made.

Sony is making the Blu-Ray drive included with every thing, so then they will have to publish their games on Blu-Ray (yea you have more space, but by a article put out two months or so ago, if the inflation rate is similar to the Xbox where game sizes grow 77% over the course of the console, then the current DVD9 format will only not be able to hold two games... I can't remember the article source though, but I bet someone has a link to it).

With the Xbox360 accessory, you can't put any games in the HD-DVD drive. It's purely for a movies.

Sony wants to make sure that anything that goes into PS3 is Blu-Ray because ultimately they don't want to lose another format war (BetaMax and UMD both failed).

There is just tons of stuff on the PS3 that a lot of people won't use... I mean sure they are "cool" when they first tell you, but after a while, you just start to wonder "Why the hell would I need that? Is this not a gaming console first-and-foremost?"

For me, I won't be getting a PS3 until long after a price drop... In the meantime though, I'll be getting the Xbox360 HD-DVD accessory... They already said that it will be bar-none the cheapest HD-DVD player out there (for obvious reasons, but you also need to have an Xbox360 to use it)...

That is a really smart move to have user-choice (because I've already shown that having the extra space for games isn't necessary)... Mainly because There is something like 20-30% of Americans out there who own an HDTV... What about the other 80-70%? They get screwed out of paying for something they won't even notice the difference for with their SDTV's. This is expected to grow and by 2010 roughly 55% of the American population is estimzted to have HDTV's. Guess what though... The next Xbox would most likely be announced that year or the year after, and I can promise you with absolute certainty that it will contain HD-DVD (or Blu-Ray if it somehow manages to climb itself out of the hole it is digging now with lackluster picture quality). Only then will a majority of the users out there need a hi-def player one way or the other...

Anyways, as this stands now, I don't really believe that the PS3 will win this generation. Price is just too much for the average consumer (sure the early adoptors will buy one, but you can't survive off of them and the other hardcore markets. You need the average consumer support)

I actually have a bunch of friends who plan on buying the PS3 and won't even touch a 360 because there aren't any decent games on it they think.

I'm with them, except for the part of buying a PS3...I'm way too poor.

Buying the $600 one is stupid unless you have a very high end HDTV. First of all the higher end version only has a 60GB HD, not 80. Secondly the lower end version has a 20GB HD that can be upgraded and interchanged just like the higher end version, so you could buy a HD much bigger than 60GB for the $100 price difference.

The only thing the $600 model has that the $500 one doesn't and can't upgrade to is HDMI, which doesn't affect games at all and won't affect movies for at least two years ... that's if they decide to go with that form of copy protection at all.

It isn't like with the 360, where the core system is a gimped and somewhat useless shadow of the real console (no backwards compatability, limited Live support, no special features like demos). The two versions of the PS3 perform exactly the same.

Only problems i got is that in Europe we will only get the $600 version and not the $500 version aswell and they will raise the price here. And nowing Sony they will rip us of like they always do lowing the price everywhere but here.

Look, if you're having trouble figuring out whether to get the $500 or $600 version, just get both. After all, if you're getting a PS3, you can afford to throw money away.

I heard the PS3 is going to be €600, what a ****ing rip-off.

People say stuff like this ... but it's kinda silly. If Blu-Ray does win the format war, and it very well may, you will ALL buy a player regardless of which console you prefer. This, added to the price of the 360 or even the Wii will be over $500. Also, the PS3 is the console I want more than the other two because of the first and second party developers. You can see where my logic comes from.

To anyone who missed it - if Blu-Ray does become the dominant format, and assuming you all want to continue watching movies in your homes, the PS3 is effectively cheaper than the 360 and close to the Wii. The beauty of this is you can wait to see which format wins before you buy a console, and if Blu-Ray loses I guarantee you will see a significant price drop.

Oh yeah, the prices for electronics in Europe are ridiculous, I can't imagine paying that much.

Well MAYBE..i'm just throwing "possible" scenarios out..... By the time Blu-Ray or HD-DVD gain any significant lead over one another.... prices on Blu-Ray Drives will go down significantly.

Then the Ps3 will be what? $450, $400 still? The 360 will have gone down quite a bit by then too, and the Wii will probably be around $100 - $150 by that time.

All i'm saying is, "if" Blu-Ray does become dominant, movies will still be coming out on DVD's 5 - 8 years after... Eventually you'll have Blu-Ray players at $60. Plus in order to actually see any of the damn image quality improvements you'll need an HD-TV anyway. So why not also wait for HD-TV price to come down aswell? During that wait time you can still keep buying all the new movies on DVD's.

Sure, the PS3 costing $600 is justifiable. It's got Blu-ray, new processor technology, great HDTV support. But $600 is $600. People in their target audience (which is still mostly young people) can't afford that and parents don't always like to drop that kind of money on something for their kid. And I think I speak for the vast majority of people (people, not gamers) when I say that I don't give a f*** about Blu-ray. I don't care about high definition at all. HDTV+HD format player = No food for a week. Putting Blu-ray as a selling point now would be like putting DVD as a selling point in 1998. A few years from, when HD is becoming something normal people can buy, PS3 will do great. But in the beginning, it's gonna hurt. Sony is in this for the long term however, and that's when PS3 will pay off. Sony probably knows this too, and they're just trying to sweep in the hardcore and the early adopters as best they can so they can last until the payoff.

watch when it comes out in the UK at £600 :bonce:

:p

Wow man u have got to be kidding. I'm probably getting a Nintendo myself...much cheaper, better games, more innovative, ect. Rather than a 600 dollar piece of crap filled with features that no one will use.
