...and PTSD (post traumatic ..you know the rest)

"Lawyers for a man accused of killing two police officers and a dispatcher say their defense case will involve post-traumatic stress disorder and testimony about video games.

Defense attorney Jim Standridge made the statements as jury selection continued Tuesday in the capital murder trial of Devin Darnell Moore, previously referred to as Devin Darnell Thompson.

He's charged with six capital murder counts in the 2003 deaths of Fayette officers Arnold Strickland and James Crump and dispatcher Leslie "Ace" Mealer. Moore pleaded not guilty by reason of serious mental defect."

Moore allegedly told jailers that "Life is a video game. You have to die sometime." He allegedly made the statements after stealing Strickland's gun at the police station, fatally shooting the victims and leading police on a high-speed chase.

I can almost hear the lawyers now ..."yes the psychiatrist believes he is clinically insane ..but IT WAS VIDEO GAMES that pushed him over the edge ...Doug Lowenstein killed those 6 people ..America your children are not safe"

So I was playing Super Mario when I got the inspiration to go around stomping on midgets and stealing their coins. After that, I went and held up a 7-11 (killed everybody there), engaged in all kinds of beastiality and came up with a few new positions, and then set fire to a farmer's crops. I repeated this pattern throughout America before adding a new trick; I'd cut myself in the mouth and then spew blood all over people so they can get AIDS. To make sure I was infected, I raped and murdered about a dozen prostitutes in the most skanky areas of the nation. I finally got bored and figured I'd nuke myself along with the state of Texas, but the damn detonator wouldn't work, and so I got arrested.

...Yes, your honor. I did play Super Mario.

...Yes, your honor. That is a video game.

...I'm off the hook? Ace, dude.

Do they have anything else besides him making an analogy to video games?

Maybe they should blame obesity on the movie Forest Gump. (Life is like a box of chocolates!)

Bah can't people take responsibility for themselves.

Stop with this bloody blame culture.

I'm getting sick of all this.

You're no better Stern- I know you just keep us updated on all this insanity because you can guarantee solidarity :p

That was a joke. Honest. Please don't initiate a game-inspired hunt for me, because I know the kind of twisted things that happen in games.

Like economic management, character interaction, and roleplay. All digusting things. Give me a video nasty any day, because if I want to see death and rape and drug abuse it'd best be somebody else doing it and not a heap of pixels directed by my keyboard!

I think you just called me insane ;)

Pfffttt screw these lawsuits.

I'm off to play Manhunt!

He managed to steal a policeman's gun while inside a police station!?

I think we have a slightly bigger problem than video games on our hands here.

Moore pleaded not guilty by reason of serious mental defect.

Damn right he's got a mental defect, he's a ****ing murderer. THAT'S NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOUR!

Don't you just hate it when polititions blame inanimate objects for crime, and try to pass laws punishing everybody for one person's abuse, CptStern??

I know I do.

I'd love to see on rockstars website: "Lawyers blame Thomas the Tank Engine PC game for leading to a kids playground beating" just to shove it Sir Thompsons face.

But not even thats as retarded as your ego.
By retarded you must mean sexy, right? Any reply to this will just confirm what I have stated, and so will the lack of replying.

Videogames need to be REMOVED as a viable defense. Though... I think insanity should be too <shrugs> Very few people i'm sure who plead insanity, were really insane at the time. Its just a defense tactic, anything to get the guy off.

Blame culture ftw.

This is reminding me of that kid who stabbed a baby. Obviously videogames did it even though the kid went on to rant and rave about the baby being so goddamn annoying, and how he always felt that the baby was mum's favourite and that mum never loved him anymore... :upstare:

Any reply to this will just confirm what I have stated, and so will the lack of replying.

What if his reply is 'no'?

Grr people like that annoy me immensely.

Before videogames were around, it was violent films, etc.

Can't people just stick to the age ratings prescribed? Bloody hell.

totally agree.

this is getting so pathetic.

Accuser: why did you axe that man 2 death?

Guilty Man: PC games told me to!

In most cases, video games are an outlet for aggression, not the source.

Don't you know it - the war on iraq was George Bush's conception of 'a videogame'.

Exactly, that's the assumption I made from reading that article.

I know I do.
Except this is about whether an inanimate object can CAUSE someone to commit a crime, rather than whether an inanimate object can ENABLE them to do so.

Or to put it more accurately:
Whether an inanimate object designed and manafactured for the sole purpose of entertainment can CAUSE someone to commit a crime, rather than whether an inanimate object designed and manafactured for the sole purpose of killing can ENABLE them to do so.

Besides, in most of these "videogames make kids kill" witch-hunts, it's borne out of a minor abusing a firearm. Videogames are a handy scapegoat to keep the questioning of gunlaws at bay.
Thus we see from rational logic:
Games + Teenagers = Mentally unsound crackpot ready to blow
Which leads us to:
Mentally unsound crackpot ready to blow + Firearms = Bloodbath
Although in fairness, I imagine some would argue:
Mentally unsound crackpot ready to blow + Tissue paper = Bloodbath

But I digress. This trial is nonsense and the lawyers are both clever and despicable for playing on such nonsensical untruths and fears about computer games. For shame!
