It's kind of the HL2.net equivalent of the basement where you keep Sloth.
 
If they do release screens/video of Portal 2 I hope it'll actually be a scene from HL3 due for 2010. It's been almost 6 years since HL2, and HL2 came out 6 years after HL1.

Half-Life 2 was merely a rumor until a strong impression at E3 in May 2003 launched it into high levels of hype where it won several awards for best in show. It had a release date of September 2003, but was delayed.

I don't see the engine itself being a big announcement. They've lost that battle with CryEngine 3 and Unreal. Why bother to compete?

But, what were they doing between HL1 and 2? Making HL2. They've been busy with like 4-5 other games since HL2 came out. Granted their studio has probably grown considerably since then, given some of those titles were developed simultaneously, but I find it hard to believe they've been pulling off all of that and making an entirely new Half-Life game (alongside the episodes, no less).

Not that I wouldn't squeal with glee if it was true. :p
 
An announcement of HL3 or a new Source engine (even an updated source engine) seems odd sans Gabe Newell for the reveal.
 
Though to keep something like HL3/new engine under wraps you'd need quite the small group...
 
Nobody's going to spill the beans with the threat of Gabe eating them everpresent.
 
Hype is what the gaming industry is all about.
But you don't hear about any hype in Porn though because everyone is happy with year old porn for free....hell you don't even notice the difference

Most members here apart from the newbies (MOST newbies) dropped the HL series on it's head long ago. Chatter about HL plot, gameplay, etc, will probably pick up again after HL3 or even Portal 2 is released, which is probably a long way off.
 
So, Source is never going to be superceded right? Just procedural updates to keep up with the latest tech, right?

Well, that doesn't exactly preclude a massive update to Source to bring it up to speed for something of HL3's caliber. Doesn't mean they'd have to entirely replace the engine or give it a fancy new name (although this would make sense for marketing reasons), but it'd still be a 'new' version.

Well I hope that Source 3 is at least as optimized and runs as smooth on then current tech as Source 2 did with HL2 after it's release. Nothing ruins a PC game as much as a crappy engine.

I have faith in Valve though.

Except that's pretty much what they did with Source 2k7. It was such a colossal update that it broke half their older games, and required a large overhaul for mods to keep up with. Sure, it's still called Source, but it's essentially like saying 'hey, you want to play with TF2 tech? Better get coding,' which is what would happen had they released a new engine altogether.

Nah, just clarifying the Goonies reference where Sloth got dropped on his head by his mother.

Most older members have exhausted every drop of HL related material from G-man theories, where City-17 is located, gameplay, technical issues, and has moved on to spam the rest of the site's off-topic forums with things like relationship issues, mundane everyday life problems, the latest non-video game fads, etc. If it weren't for the games and gaming forums and other non-related HL Valve material, the admins probably would've abandoned all hope for HL2.net long ago.

When Portal 2 and HL3 is released, the whole purpose for this site will hopefully be rekindled once again.
 
I don't think I ever browsed the on-topic sections with any regularity after hl2 came out.
 
anyone have the details of this sites usage in the last 3 days or so compared to a few months ago? I'm sure we jumped up a bit

We have a nice community here. We don't really need to talk about Valve games to justify our existence.
