ok, first off, I checked forceware, beta, official, and omega drivers all day today, they all give me the same problem. right now I Am running 66.93. I have a geforce 6800, amd 2500+, and 512 mb of ram. I play hl2/dm/css at high settings @ 1024x768 with 2x af and no AA. here are some problems

hl2 never seems to run at a reasonable framerate, it's 80-100 with nothing going on, or it's 30 in a gunfight, or 20 most of the time. this is unbearable. on coast, I can't look to the right (towards the water) without lagging very badly.

hl2dm is seems to "stutter", by that I mean it drops to 3 fps for atleast 5-8 seconds, then goes back to normal

css, when I use the M4, my fps seems to drop, drastically

and I just got this card two freakin' days ago.

also, my pc does very great in doom 3 and farcry (minus an annoying problem where the floor is rainbow sometimes..)

please help!

btw, I know I posted this before, but I didn't get all that detailed :p

if you have good [cpu] cooling, overclock. 2500+'s are easy to oc.

As for your frames per second dropping to 3, you might want to take a look at this:

SYMPTOMS
When you play the games that uses a motherboard based on the VIA Technologies chip set, you may experience one or more of the following behaviors:

• The game may not be able to start.
• Slow game performance or your mouse may move very slowly when navigating in-game.
• Game may appear to stop responding (freeze or "hang") when a single game screen (such as the Star Systems or Orbital View screen) is displayed for several minutes.
• Your screen may go black.
• When you play a multiplayer game, you may experience slow performance in your game (lag).
• Your game may run but you cannot shut down the game and restart the game multiple times without a restart.

CAUSE
This issue may occur if you have not installed the most recent drivers for your VIA Technologies chip set motherboard.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, install the latest VIA chipset drivers for your motherboard from the following VIA Technologies Web site:
http://www.viatech.com

Update the Via 4-in-1 Chipset Driver for Your Motherboard
If you are experiencing the issues listed on a computer with a motherboard based on the VIA Technologies chip set, install the latest VIA 4-in-1 driver from the following:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2

Important
Contact your hardware manufacturer before you install the latest VIA motherboard driver on your computer or make any modifications to your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) settings.

Also, flash-upgrade your computer’s BIOS. For instructions on how to do this, contact VIA or the manufacturer of your motherboard

NOTE:
For motherboards with built-in video adapters, you may be able to reset the video settings to default or optimum in the motherboard's basic input/output system (BIOS) settings. See the documentation that came with your computer or contact the manufacturer for more information.
I saw that you had an AMD processors and maybe this is your problem. It might be a bit of a long shot, but anythign is worth adressign towards 3 frames per second. :)

I had the same problems (P4 2.6Ghz HT, 512Mb Corsair TwinX PC3200 Dualchannel, GeForce6800).

I solved them by reverting the changes the HL2 Benchmark program did to my config files (Without asking me to do so, I might add!)

I can't quite remember which Benchmark tool it was, I believe "Hardware OC HL2 Benchmark".

So, if you installed any 3rd party benchmark tool, try to uninstall it and edit your config files (reset 'em to the default ones).

Hope that helps!

alright. i figured out I should just turn reflect all to reflect world. and now it's 1280x780 or something, high textures, models, reflect world, high shaders, 4xaa/8xaf. it plays great, but now when i look at a scripted sequence, it starts to dip, low. like the train on red letter day. looking at that kills frames, or when dr kilener is complaining about lamar. when that scene stopped, frames went back up. whats wrong?

edit: I bumped AF to 4x and AA to 2x, and it doesn't do that anymore. i'll leave it at that, it looks fine already. but it still stutters abit, i'll try bumping up heapsize.

funny this, at the current moment im reinstalling the game and changing drivers because i dont even get above 90fps on my rig in the stress test, which means i get a damn lag playing HL2, this shouldn't be happening, it really gets on my nerves that i have a good system and stiff it screws around with me.....GRRR

fps_max 500 in the console. It might be capped at 70.

EDIT: You might also find that most people don't get anywhere above 70 in the stress test anyway.

thx for that Chris ill try that, i just reformated my PC last night and am bak to square one, im installing HL2 right now so ill giv that a try wen im done
