But WOW.

I have been overseas for the last 4 years (not of my own making), 3 of those years were spent in Kiev and Lviv in Ukraine, and 1 in Moscow. I Just want to say WOW!!!! on Half Life2. I know that everyone has played it already, done it, but to me, it was/is all new. When you ran through the canals at the beginning and looked up at the buildings, all I could think was - wow, that looks exactly like my building and where is my laundry!!! Koodos to the developers (Musta been from E.Erurope) for capturing and making the game so Goddamnsovietrealistic!!! Just wanted to say to all the gamers out there, if you wanna travel to Russia, Ukraine, or 4 of the Stans, it looks exactly (no joke) like in HL2! Ok, enuff on the uppers. Great freakin game.

Thats pretty cool. :D

The developers (Valve Software) are based in seattle, I'm still not sure why they chose Eastern Europe though.

Well, it makes a change from America this, America that.

Then again, maybe they're saying that America would never bow down to the Combine. In that case then, maybe the Combine DESTROYED America! Wahey!

Yeah, I think the setting and environments in the game was by far the most impressive and immersive aspect.

I don't live as east as russia, but even here in sweden there's lots of victorian-style buildings and suburbian projects that look almost identical to the game's urban cityscapes.

The main influences(I think):
St. Petersburg
Sofia
Warsaw

And there is a real town called Odica(sp?), can't remember where

i think what Valve wanted to do was give a "whole world under attack!" type of feeling and not just one part of the world.
remember, this game is as much about saving the world as it is trying to rebel against the powerful Combine force.

anyway Valve definitely achieved what they wanted i think :D

I think it was something to do with an ex-Communist setting emphasising oppresion. Also because it is an alien place(to most players) without actualy being another world.

Edit: also because Easter Europe has as blend of new and old buildings in a way that you don't get in the rest of the world(or something like that)

A Mod set in London, based around the HL2 would be good, same kind of time as Aftermath, bringing down the Citadel in London. :D

 Yeah i think a HL2 mod set in london would be ace

They only do if you have the game in english. Switch your Steam language to russian and presto!:afro:

so then switching to British English would be ideal? assuming that option is available ;)

I think what he means is, since the game is set in Europe, why is there Americans there? Why is there not russians, french, english people? Its just americans, did valve forget to add the europeans?

I've never thought of it this way, but its kind of abit silly really.
game is made & played in Europe but you only speak to Americans?

I reckon:

- Eastern Europe is an interesting and new-ish setting for such a game, and certainly very different from Black Mesa.

- The history-rich area, the old-style architecture and so on, when juxtaposed with the weird austere futurist brutalist Combine installations, makes the contrast between them and us all the more apparent. It makes for a very interesting mix.

- The setting recalls Communist Russia or more fittingly, Eastern Europe where the Soviets imposed their regime on nations that didn't necessarily want it. Lots of totallitarian/oppressive connotations and also evokes Warsaw and other ghettos. It really resonates with the subject matter - this is a place that's seen terror and oppression before.

- Characters are American because, I'd guess, they're immigrants. When you see all these American characters in a strange European city, you assume that they've fled America because America has been all but destroyed. That and the fact that the Combine are constantly relocating citizens from city to city.

There are accents in the Antlion mod (don't remember the name exactly) if you want to hear something really thick. lol

There was one English guy though, the proper englishman type, that Colnel whats his face who gives you the RPG.

cubbage, but his english accent was fake wasnt it? he was american too i think.

English or American English. That would be idealer.

People are used to hearing american accents in games, perhaps this is another possible reason why they went with normal american accents. It might also be cheaper/easier to get american voice actors to do the job. Personally I would probably be annoyed if everyone talked "weird".

First guys you talk to (paraphrasing):

"No matter how many times I get transferred I never get used to it."

"This is my third transfer this year."

Obviously none of these people are native europeans. Maybe the Combine filled up the United States with Eastern Europeans.

hehe, breen has accent... so does eli..
about citizens, well, i agree with both Sulkdodds and DoctorWeeTodd.

Fr Gregori and the Fishermen are the only people we've seen with the right accent. And notice how neither are citizens.

maybe they are taking natives to countries and putting them in other countries, you know, mixing the races and cultures so that they have a hard time uniting against someone, but then again that might be bullshit. or maybe the us has been destroyed because It didnt surrender and led the war agianst the combine while most of europe surrendered...
