Yesterday i pop in Farcry install on my new pc. Played for 6 hours. Today i pop in farcry and it doesnt detect the cd. I go hummm ok maybe a bad cd? Check for problems on cd its in mint condition. I pop in a dvd game oblivion works fine. Then i test a random burned cd doesnt work just detects cd. Says the amount of space used up but cant read files. So i pop in a dvd and it works..

So.

CD-Game = doesnt work
CD-R = doesnt work
DVD-Game = works
DVD-PCGAMER CD = works

So everything DVD works nothing CD works. WTF?

That is one retarded ass shit if you ask me. Out of the blue this happened, i havnt changed anything (besides reinstall quicktime and uninstall k-lite codec pack.)

retest all the different mediums, they might work spasmodically.

also try reinstalling your drive's drivers.

yeah, i've got similar problems...any game i try to install that uses discs "Doom 3, MOH:pA, Silent Hill 3) will install but when I try to play the game it will freeze my computer...same thing with DVD's...it will auto-start the DVD's then freeze my computer. Games that are installed via Steam run fine, anything installed from CD however crash my comp. Also, it usual doesn't burn a disc right the first few times so I end up wasting at least 2 CD-R's per session. It's a discontinued line but that shouldn't keep me from finding the correct drivers right? i'm convinced that's the problem though...the drivers

Most games/Softwares work with CD/DVDs with the write/read rate of 8X and 16X, faster than that and some softwares/games specially older ones won't perform OK, sometimes the auto executor/launcher doesn't execute at all.

In this case use your DVD as your CDROM since most DVD rate is 8-16X.

Check Starforce in your system, and check if you have double layer DVD/CD burner. starforce is start to complicate stuff when used with combine CD/DVD writers.
Write-click My Computer, Properties, hardware, Device manager, (On the top menu option) Click View, Show hidden devices. In the Device manager dialog, look for Non Plug And Play Drivers, press the + on left-side of the non plug and play drivers and look for Starforce in the drop-down.
If it shows there and you want to remove it download driver-remover from here: http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php

Good Luck.

Did you check your device manager for driver issues and for starforce?

I havnt installed anything. I was playing FarCry the day before, i woke up the next morning and it wasnt working. I checked for drivers on the NEC site and they dont have anything newest driver they have is like 1996....

Only thing i did in between the time it was working and wasnt was reinstall quicktime and uninstall k-lite codec pack.

Maybe it is drivers dunno you recommend any?

Uninstall (separately and reboot separately) those two programs, specially K Lite and see what happens.

Also check your device manager for driver issues. I already posted the instructions on how.

Good Luck.

this happend to a friend of mine, he just replaced his drive. This even happend to my cousin's Playstation 2! It would not read CD games, only DVD games. He's gone through 2 PS2s and I've had mine I dunno how long, about a year after PS2 came out. Anydangway, my guess is the CD "reader" portion of the drive screwed up. I'd just get a new one imo. It's a quick way to solve a strange problem.
