Ok, now what's wrong with this?

I'm just reinstalling this game after my hd died last December. I got through all the file copying from the CDs. It asked me to log onto my Steam account, which I did. It returned me to the desktop, and I clicked the shortcut to play.

First it says, "You are about to install Half Life 2." WTF, I just installed it! Then when I click next or whatever, it says that all the Steam servers are busy, go screw myself for a few minutes and try again.

WTF? As usual, I'm getting just about as livid with this Steam crap as half the people forced to slog through these problems all the time. Bitch, whine, moan, complain, whatever.

The servers have been too "busy" to service a paying customer for a couple hours. How do I get this crap to play? Because I swear, I'm on the verge of uninstalling it and never looking back. I searched all over the net tonight, and I couldn't find any faqs or anything that addressed this. There used to be all kinds of stuff before to help people with the stupid servers, but I can't find it now.

Thanks,

Kristen

Thanks, I'll give it a try. After I find my eyeballs, because they blew out of my head from all the blood pressure, lol.

See ya,

Kristen

I couldn't find anything on their site about a "server busy" problem. All it said about updating is that you have to start Steam and connect to their servers to automatically update anything. You can't do it manually like for normal games. Well, I can't connect to their server, because they claim to be too busy! So I'm back to the same problem, stuck in the same place - nowhere.

I don't understand how these guys can justify all this paranoid anti-piracy stuff that inconveniences paying customers more than actual pirates if they can't even be bothered to make sure their own servers can handle the requests made of them. If someone bought a car and it wouldn't start up because its computer had to connect to some central server but couldn't, there would be rioting in the streets. But we're supposed to accept it in this case, because this is software. Bullcrap.

Know what? This is the last game I'm buying from these guys. They could put out the world's best game ever, and I don't care. Sorry, Valve, you just lost another customer. Doom 3 may suck, but at least I can play it whenever I want! And I'd rather spend my time playing a sucky game than wasting my free time trying to fight my way through anti-piracy garbage.

Thanks for trying, anyway,

Kristen

do u have xfire cause that interferes with steam

You just need to let off steam mate...

Let off steam... see what I did there... let off... ha... haha.. er... ha

Nope, no Xfire.

I didn't have to activate my XP online, because it's some OEM thing. It's so nice; I just install and go... My husband has to get on the phone with MS and argue with them for 10 minutes every time he formats his HD, and that's a lot, because he's a software developer. Man, I'd probably shoot myself in the head! I have no patience for jumping through hoops. :x

Thanks,

Kristen

well maybe you could actually wait, did you check if the servers are actually backed up, and are the correct ports open (i doubt youll need that)

I agree with you, Steam sucks. Maybe just forget about it and try again tomorrow to see if it works. You never know, maybe Steam will decide to let you play a game you've already purchased. Hurrah! :|

If it says the servers are busy it means they are hot darnit busy. Try again tomorrow, or later tonight.

I, for one, actually like steam. I didn't have to go to the store 50m away to get the game. The auto patching is useful (and easily disabled while im on 56k), and i've had not problems with reinstalling (backups worked like a charm) nor running in offline mode.

The only bad thing about steam, in retrospect, is that I have to listen to others complain about their problems with it.

So many people expect technology to just work without any knowlege of it...

Just do the update overnight. The servers are usually less busy when most people are in bed.

I managed to unlock HL2 on the first day of release because I was up before everyone else (it seemed). It took 15 minutes before I could play, guess I was lucky, as people reported serious problems about 40 minutes after I'd got it up and running.

Am I the only person who has NEVER had a problem with steam?

1) I got HL2 the night of, in about 20 minutes
2) Xfire doesn't crash it
3) I've never had a game just crash on me, if it has, it's been of my own stupid mistake...

I mean seriously? IS it all of you doing something wrong, or am I jsut lucky. I've had steam for almost 2 years now... I refused to get it for a while because of people like YOU guys... now I love the thing, and I don't know what i would do without it. I hate d/ling patches for mods, so I like the auto updating... seriously, I don't see the problem.

Gotta admit tho', their grievances are fair enough. If you couldn't play a game you'd just paid for because of electronic bureaucracy, you'd be pissed.

Agreed, steam has always worked fine for me, cept for damn Friends which never worked, but now xfire is out who cares about friends :p

Hell yeah, never had a problem here either.
But anyway, this isn't really helping the thread author: had any luck?

i dont hv permanent internet connection in my hum... im at public internet...
but ive got my friends account n not allowed to play online... its costly...

Try deleting clientregistry.blob in your steam folder, when you load up steam it will make a new one, and that will find a different server to connect to update. So its like a starting again shortcut method. Also check that all the sourcesounds.gcfs etc are in that steam folder...make sure you installed it to the right place. Sorry you are having problems, but you are in a minority, and its 99% down to the client side, for whatever reason. Good luck.

Exact same here

the only time i ever had a problem with stema was when i was still logged in and i deleted it manually by accident from my hard drive

my account got comepltly fudged but i sent and emila to steam containg my login info n stuff siad i was a bit annoyed and 2 days later they had my account fixed and replie din an email personally and were very polite and nice.
so STFU and give VALVe a chance they jsut made a new god dam game engine are creating expansions for hl2,and making cs 2 tf 2 and running maintaining and constanly updating steam aswell as existing games in their catalo
gue

You speak the truth.

I have never had a problem with Steam.

That being said I don't like the idea of a game being fundamentally connected with a piece of 3rd party software. Many people do have problems with Steam, especially if you play in offline mode. I'd prefer my CD key to be registered with the actual game.

If it is fundementally connected with Steam how can it be a piece of 3rd party software? If we're talking in general terms, HL2 is a piece of 3rd party software! :)
Anyways, I can't see how that could be a problem as VALVe make both. And sorry, less people than you think have problems with VALVe/Steam. Seriously. (Heh, most times it's their own fault :p)

/me ducks

Ok, thanks, I'll try that right now. [some time later] Yes! It's doing it now! You are a god! Now why couldn't I find that information on Steam's help site last night??? grrrr

Joims:
>...so STFU and give VALVe a chance...

Nope. After 24 hours, I would catagorize the situation as ridiculous, especially since I didn't find anything to help me in their own customer support section (a search on "busy server" should have brought this suggestion up.) I'd think most people would agree a server problem for 24 hours, especially after all the months they've had to correct problems, is pretty annoying. If I didn't get that registry information from Hectic Glenn, I'd still be up a creek without a gravity gun!

Thanks again for the help, guys,

Actually, you could have found it in this help question...:p

i hate steam,
i wish you could play hl2 like any other game!
EDIT: also, i am scared out of my mind something i do (mod using) might get my account closed and i'll lose my $50 hl2 for ever! (losing $50 becuase your game detected suspicuase activity is evil!)

I tell you what's wrong with it. It's dead, that's what wrong with it!

Oh yay, another topic where it's suddenly got people like diluted making "steam sucks" comments then the whole topic goes off on a rail like this.

You don't like steam, fine then. Stop using it uninstall HL2 and forget it exists. And before anybody gives me some bullshit about them not being needed to connected to each other(steam and HL2) Steam acts as an interface to the GCF file system, no filesystem no files.

You want steam to fail don't buy any valve games, when valve goes under and we are left with EA pumping out the sims 21: Crack Whore we all know who to turn to.

I'm glad you fixed your original problem, hoping to frag you soon :p
