The strangeest thing happened today during english class (forgein, not mother language)!

This year we got a new teacher who came all the way from canada, he is a small skiny person, looks very nice and polite!
So...we were discusing about the atom bomb droped on Japan during 2. WW, which i'm very interested in (i study history). Because of this i was very active and made a lot of comments, until we went to the vocabulary.
The teacher was explaining the meaning of "stunn", which in that contex meant "shocked", but i've (very nicely) interupted and explained that "stun" also can mean "paralize" or something like that. The teacher looks at me very nicle and said politely "yes, yes, of course", then he turns his head down in his book to see whats next, when he moaned (like he was thinking too loud) "what a big shoot"! Being the last one who talked i knew it was meant for me, but he thought that i wouldn't understand American sleng (because it's not our language), but i do know what that means, sort of "you think your so great, good, tough,...?".

That so hypocrite of him, i was just trying to make the class more interesting, because i'm almost the only one who ever listens! He could have told me to shut up in the face! Well i was very offended so i kept quiet the whole hour, and not even looked at him.

It's less humiliating for the teacher to yell at you infront of the whole class, than this! Oh...well, it's the end of the year anyway, so i'll probably never seeing him again.

Yes i know, but this guy looked and behaved like "jesus" in person!

To be honest, in my experience, people who come from English speaking countries to teach english in a foreign country seem to be the lowest form of denomination, just went into teaching English abroad as a last resort in the hope of scoring with loads of foreign girls.

That's from who I've met of course, I'm sure there's people who are genuinely interested in teaching English abroad.

a teacher in my school told our korean foreign exchange student to "go back to china or wherever you came from"

are you sure he was talking about you? could have been referring to anything ...but dont take it personally. You guys have to remember that teachers have a tough job ..you try keeping 30 teens in line without using threats, intimidation or even raising your voice ...not too mention that most teachers make slightly better wages than garbage collectors. Give the guy a break ..if he continues, go straight to your principle

Yeah, the offensive teachers are usually the ones with the best personality once you get to know them.

tsk tsk tsk ...obviously you havent read Oedipus ..if that's any indication I'll be killing you and taking your wife (my mother) ...ya ...I'm not so sure how that makes sense, but I'm sticking to it!)

Well I know the outline of the story and I am very scared to learn you have an Oedipus complex :O

well only cuz my son's mother is hot ;)

well you were being cheeky with the stun thing. Paralyze, shock, it's pretty similar and he's only explaining the context. Maybe it's cause I'm Canadian too and it's a Canadian reaction.

One time I had a substitute in PE that told me she wished "osama would come and bomb my dirty jew ass." I just LMAO and told her to **** off. She didn't do anything because she didn't want to get in trouble. But I told the principle anyways. Needless to say, she never worked in southern california again.

Yeah, I had a history teacher that told me J. Robert Oppenheimer wasn't involved in the development of the atomic bomb. If you don't know him... he was the ****ing scientific director of the Manhattan Project (the WWII project to develop the first nuclear weapons). People don't call him the "father of the atomic bomb" because he had bad gas...

Teachers are the lowest form of scum, just below doctors and policemen.

I have only ever respected maybe 2 or 3 teachers in my lifetime.

The rest I hate. Period.

I've respected all of the teachers i have met in my lifetime, exept 1, my PE teacher.

Reason: being hit with a baseball bat isn't a very nice thing.

Heh, funny you should say that...

My favourite teacher was the one that hit the idiots of our school with a baseball bat and was fair and sporting to the rest of us.

Well, to be fair that is a stereotype that is followed quite often. But let's not lose sight of the fact that it is a stereotype.

I'm considering going back overseas to teach English next year after I graduate. I've lived in China before, but I was studying - not teaching. While I was there I met some male teachers who were total sleazes. I also met some male teachers who were genuinely interested in the culture (as I am), learned the language (as I did), and respected local customs (as I did).

And there were many women who taught English as well, albeit fewer than the men.

On the topic of teachers in general - I respect the good teachers out there. It is one of the most important jobs there is, yet more often than not it is under shitty conditions for crappy pay.

And back to the original poster's topic ;)

Perhaps the sigh was not meant to be directed at you. There will always be cultural differences to account for. Perhaps to this teacher he didn't realise the context of his sigh in relation to the class.

Or he was just a vindictive ass.

I can totally respect that, it's good to hear from someone who's doing it for the right reasons, restoring my confidence in humanity. Good luck in that :)

are you people forgetting that I'm a former teacher? do I look like I'm stuck in the 60's and 70's? do I look like a petty vindictive bastard that will try to humiliate a student at every chance? come on people, think before you speak! ...teachers spend more time with you than your parents do and often know more about you ...I bet every single person here can relate a good story on how a teacher went out his way to help you when nobody elese would.
