I left my HL2 DM map to compile and open in the game to test, then came back an hour later.

When I looked at the screen there were bullet holes all over the place.

Apparently a few different people had signed onto my server and apparently auto-downloaded the map. To there dismay probably, there were no weapons, and the walls were only textured with the dev textures.

How do I test a map without creating a server on the Internet?

It happened again! Twenty seconds after opening my map, someone signed on and started giving me comments on it. I don't want people to see my unfinished product, and I don't want to waste their time!

I believe that you are looking for the variable sv_lan. I believe you can set it to non-internet usage thusly: sv_lan 1

I could be wrong tho.

sv_lan 1 or

sv_password password

or tell the firewall to block it completely if you want to be entirely sure.

yeah... that was wierd.. happened to me too... I went to take some sceenshots of a model for my mod... and then someone joined. I was confused.

Thanks for the help.

It's funny that someone would join a server with a map named testmap.

oh that could be very disturbing if you're making a map for the contest and have a great idea that you want to keep to yourself.

oops 100 mbit lan connection about to be installed in 5 mins, be back later :)

just happened to me! i was making a little warehouse that i wanted to port over to HL2 (CSS runs much quicker) and after changing my graphics detail someone had joined me in a small square room! :S

made me realise how important an evenly balanced map is! i couldn't resist trying to kill him 3 or 4 times before i quit! :D

How to avoid players turning up and pestering you (the fun way)

Build your map.. BUT, put all your player start points in a room cut off from your real map. And create a puzzle that opens a door in the wall to allow you to exit but not them when they turn up. Stick a camera in that room, soon as people turn up, press some buttons elsewhere and watch them on a monitor as they either burn or drown or fall on spikes or so on

Or why not put them in a maze. Play god with these people who join your incomplete map. They'll soon get bored, and you'll have recorded demo's you can show.

Hey its an idea :p

i like it!

either that way, or by only putting either one info_player_terrorist or one info_player_counterterrorist!

well you get to play god even though it's a normal map you're working on, for a while at least
