Its a vengeance themed movie. Just like Sympathy for Mr/Lady Vengeance. Thats all it has in common.

They also have the same director in common. :E

Um, and actor Kwang-rok Oh in common: he's the guy with the dog in Oldboy and an anarchist at the end of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Se-hyun's father in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

I enjoyed Oldboy, but was disappointed when we discovered the reason for his incarceration. The plot is too implausible to take seriously, even for a crazy Japanese movie, and feels contrived. Everything is geared towards making the audience go 'ergh' at the finale (something which it certainly achieves), and that's it. Finding out that the answer for all the questions that had kept me engrossed in the movie during the first hour was 'for shock value' left me feeling a little cheated.

In the end Oldboy is sick for the sake of being sick (imo, of course)

Still, I did enjoy it - 7/10

Korean movie yes, but based on a Japanese manga.

Nope, Gick is right.
Oldboy (ja:オールド・ボーイ) is the 1996-1998 Japanese manga, written by Minegishi Nobuaki and Tsuchiya Garon.

Not like it matters. Its a great piece of work either way. :)

i was excited to see this movie for the killing, but then i found out it was made after an anime, so no thanks. nevermind.

What? You didn't watch it because its based on a manga?

I'm not going to red through the thread for fear of spoiling the film (I haven't seen it yet) so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this.
Apparently the big guys at Hollywood have decided this is another film set for an American remake.

Based off a manga or not, it is so unlike the generic stereotype of manga/anime that you'd never know it. I read a lot of manga (don't watch anime, though) and wouldn't have guessed about it being derived from a manga had I not been told. I don't know what your prejudice is against manga but it is probably irrelevant to Oldboy at least.

Yeah, probably best not to read through this thread, because spoiler tags seem to have got broken since I and others made some posts about the plot here ages ago. In relation to your post, there's also been rumours of a Bollywood remake :|

Bollywood remake! That'd be sooo great! If there is one thing Oldboy was missing it was song and dance numbers and extreme closeups of people doing shifty glances.

Correct me if i'm wrong but aren't you a film student? For a film student to pass up seeing this film, is insanity. Its really really well done. The acting, music, cinematography and especially the direction is world class stuff.
