Ok I came across this discussion on another forum and thought I would bring it here. With the recent release of the Flight 93 movie it appears that the 9/11 truth seekers are doing all they can to jump on it, slate, and discredit it. Here is universal pictures forum( EDIT....although having read some of the stuff in there can't imagine it as anything at all to do with Universal Studio's) which gives but a taster of the disquiet.

EDIT......I have removed these links as this site as been abandoned by the moderators and is unregulated. Some of the posts and uncensored photoghaphs are highly offensive.

But according to this site many, many threads were simply deleted due to the shear volume.

(Please don’t get me wrong I don’t often visit here but this article is quite interesting)

With the production of another big budget movie by Olivier Stone, with such big stars as Nicholas Cage in it, it is clear this movie will appeal to a very wide audience.

Bearing in mind the speculation Oliver Stone injected into JFK, I was wondering what other peoples thoughts are on such movies. At the bottom of the page, already there is opposition to this movie.

Although the content of Oliver Stones movie is far from clear, is it actually wise to inject such a movie with speculation, if this turns out to be the case?

Or are these movies showing us all exactly what happened?

Didn’t really know where to put this since it isn’t really political I thought I would post it in the Movie section.

I know people are sick of discussions on 9/11 but this is not what this thread is about it is simply to gauge peoples views on movies of this nature. Are they here to entertain and teach us or can they mislead and fool us?

In fact is it wise at all to be making and releasing such movies when they clearly are going to provoke such strong and vocal reactions?

I saw United 93 yesterday. The two girls I was with were both sobbing all over the place after seeing it.

I don't know how accurate it is - I think they're probably about correct, and the portrayal was good.

having read the reactions of people directly or indirectly involved in the 9/11 tradegy, it doesn't seem like enough time has passed for people to accept any kind of movie, Hollywood or otherwise.

that said...some day (its kinda already happened as Ennui pointed out) a movie will be released just like movies about World War 1 and 2 are released every now and then documenting personal recollections and views and 9/11 won't be any different in that aspect of it all.

out of respect for the families affected by the tradegy, one would think people would wait a while before even starting any work on such events but i suppose this shows how insensitive humanity can be at times. :|

Yeah, I was working in NYC about 15 blocks up from the WTC in 2001 and we saw the whole thing from a publicist's office on the 4th floor of our building. It was one of the most surreal yet horrifying things I have ever witnessed. And when the first tower came down I felt like some part of my soul was being forcibly taken out of my chest somehow in slow motion (I equate it not jokingly to the feeling of intense loss and sadness that Ben Kenobi felt when Alderon blew up). It was awful.

I think these movies that are coming out now (as opposed to, say, Fahrenheit 911) are being made more to honor the people that tried to do some good on that horrible day rather than get into the politics of who's fault it was that it happened. I still think it is far too soon to be making films about this event since it is still pretty clear in my memory and I am sure that its still very clear in the memories of all who lost someone close to them. The pain is still too close and whether or not these films are celebratory, they are still so entwined with such strong feelings of loss that I can't imagine people wanting to re-experience that again just yet. I sure don't.

these films have a two fold effect; it personalises the tragedy and elevates it to mythical status (how much is reality and where does conjecture and speculation come to play?) ...it can rightfully said that this is a propaganda piece ...in fact whether it's a positive or negative protrayal doesnt matter because in the end it supports one ideology ...especially since the war on terror started by this event is still in full swing (and lagging in domestic support ...this movies timing is almost too perfect)

the movie extends that propaganda to the audience who are seeing it more as a historical drama rather than entertainment

To play devil's advocate, we don't actually know much about this movie. Its a story about rescue personel caught in a bad situation, and that in itself doesn't have to have an political angle or agenda. That's all dependent on what the director and writers decide to do.

but the events have a political angle ..it cannot be avoided

Regardless of it's political leanings, it's meant to be an extraordinary film. I'm dissapointed it doesn't come out in the UK until September. :x

[edit]That was about United 93. I fear Oliver Stone, however, won't be able to keep his ego tucked between his pants come November.

it stars nick cage, it's not going to be politically heavy handed

Now that's sarcasm, right?

I would have said, "its directed by Oliver Stone, its not going to be politically heavy handed." Then I would have included a sarcasm tag, just in case. Stone has an interesting vision, but when he gets political, he bugs the crap out of me....

no actually I wasnt being sarcastic ..no A caliber actor would willingly accept a role that could potentially ruin their career ..not when it's something as sensitive as 9/11 ..I think this will be one of Stones more toned down films

Yeah, but he's in a remake of the Wicker Man which is looking less and less like the original everyday. Pathetic that anyone would try to do that one again. This raping of the classics has got to stop!!!

And where Stone is involved, the words "toned-down" don't usually see much action...but we'll see.

What's with all the hatred toward Stone and Cage?

I don't know what the movie is about besides two firefighters stuck inside one of the towers so I don't really have an opinion on it.

I also don't see a problem with these kind of movies being made. And I almost lost an uncle and my father.

you cant avoid the after effects of 9/11 ..I mean anyone who was watching as the second plane hit instantly knew it was a terrorist attack ..that has to fit in the movie somewhere somehow

no I think the only critical movie to be made about 9/11 will be one made outside of the US ..no studio would touch Bowling for Columbine (Moore went to canada for funding) and they wouldnt touch a critical 9/11 movie with a 20 foot pole ..it would be sheer suicide. Maybe a decade or two down the road but it's far too soon. No I think Stone will play it safe this time around, despite being publically critical of the war on terror

Oliver Stone is a good filmmaker, but I did loose a lot of respect for him after I found out he had been so liberal with the facts in his movie JFK.

Wasn't he going for entertainment rather than truth in JFK?
Would that honestly excuse the fact he deliberatly twisted facts and used know wrong facts in a movie which pretends to be a realistic portrait of what happend around the JFK tragedy.
